bir diziyi izlerken bunu duydum (nasil yazildigi tam bilmiyorum, ben sadece gelen sesler benzetiyorum)

Yani regarding the rule and the word ´katini´ which could mean flash or card.

katini ?  that doesnt make sense. It should be "kartın "

Kartın biteceği tuttu. =  The cards unexpectedly finished. [run out]   

In other words, the cards finished in an appropriate time.

It is seen in some other expressions for instance we say " Susadım " when we are thirsty. It is in past form, in fact expressing the present state. [being thirsty]

So, there seems an inappropriate shift in verb tense, however it is not.

In compound verbs , the tense of  the auxilary part of the verb governs.

O akşam dışarı çıkacağı tuttu.  ---> He [unexpectedly /suprisingly  ] wanted to go out. [and he went out ] 

The future ending  +  Past  ending   =   Past  

-ecek       +   du =   DU

Past dominates because future has NOT come yet but past has already passed.

The logic is ;

O akşam dışarı çıkacağı tuttu.

A reference point in the past before the action starts ---->  He is staying inside

At point in the past just before the unexpected action starts ---> He WILL go out

At a point when the action starts ---> He is going out 

At present when we make this statement ---> He unexpectedly went out.

That´s kind of hard to understand... I´ll keep trying.

Şimdi gelecek ya da şimdilik zaman zaman nasıl olacak yoksa olmaz?

Mesela:

He changes his mind suddenly

or

He will/might change his mind in future unexpectedly.

which means:
