What does that sentence mean " böyle deyip durma" ?

I know that normally -ip durmak means "to never stop doing sth, keep on doing sth" but here with a negative imperative form "durma" I´m a bit lost.

-ip durmak is not negative so it would mean ´stop doing smth´. -ip durma is negative imperative, so ´don´t stop´ demek, saying.

Would be my guess.

Hey JNQ,

I don´t think it´s that way given that in positive form "-ip durmak" means "never stop doing something".

Look at this example :

Senelerdir söylenip duruyorlar. Niye bu saate kadar seninle tanışmadılar sanıyorsun ?

They keep on grumbling about that for years. Why do you think they didn´t meet you until today ?

So for me "böyle deyip durma" would mean "stop telling such thing" ?

Hello matdamon

You guessed it right!

When you say verb+ip duruyor it means that the person is keep doing that thing.

And when you add negative suffix -ma, -me then it  has an opposite meaning.

Böyle deyip durma - Don´t say like this.

You can easily work it out:

böyle deyip durma = do not continuously say like that, do not say the same thing again and again
