All your answers here.

From which:

There are quite a few advantages to getting an Istanbul Kart as opposed to buying tokens or ticket every time you’re going to use public transportation.

  •         Multi-Purpose — This single card enables you to pay for multiple types of transportation: buses, metros, ferries, funiculars, and tramways (yes, even the nostalgic one running on Istiklal Caddesi). Moreover, most of these transportation types no longer accept cash payments, so you’ll have to buy some kind of token or ticket before boarding anyway.
  •         Pre-Paid — Istanbul Kart is a prepaid and rechargeable card. This means that you don’t have to stand in line (and maybe miss the bus or tram) to get a valid boarding pass every time you plan to make use of public transportation. And uploading more credits can be done at designated machines, most of the times without a queue in front of you.

Here´s the official site.

From which:

To use the travel card, it is sufficient to hold the card within 0-8 cm to a card readers located in railway stations, sea transportation docks or on buses.

You are not charged multiple times for holding card close to a card reader for a long amount of time. How much you get charged and your remaining balance information is placed on the card reader.

Loading the card;
Card can be load at both İETT loading points and authorized private loading points.

Expiration
Electronic cards are good to use as much as two years.

You can pretend to be Istanbullu by just randomly waiting at the metro station staring at an imaginary point 2 meters below the floor tiles while secretely checking out the way everyone is getting in, allthewhile maintaining an ´I-don´t-care/I´m-on-another-planet/I-do-have-to-call-that-client-today´ look on your face and every 20 seconds checking your phone. Once you have figured it out, go out, have a cup of çay and when you are in the bathroom check your guide which number you have to get and where to step out. Don´t ever I repeat don´t ever show your tourist guide in public. Count the number of stations so that while in the tube you don´t have to study the metro line plan, which is a dead giveaway that you are a tourist, if your blond hair didn´t already give you away anyway. And - this is the most important (especially when there are works on the metroline) - memorize the station BEFORE the one you have to get out. This way you know when they call the station or when you see it through the window, that at the NEXT station you have to get out, and you can casually prepare to pick up your bags when you almost arrive at your destination, just like all the Istanbullu who do that every day, and you´re not frantically wild eyed looking around silently but obviously screamming AM I THERE YET?!

Trust me, works like a charm.

By the way, this method can also successfully be applied to the Paris metro and New York subway.

Good luck and have fun in Istanbul
