Hi!

I´ve noticed that often with verbs there are me or ma, but its not negative?

For example, On dakika önce odas覺n覺 temizlemeyi bitirdi. I believe its saying ten minutes ago he finished cleaning his room. What I´m confused by in the temizlemeyi, I know that temizlemek is to clean, but I´m confused by the meyi. The me makes me think it´s negative but I dont think it is?

Thanks in advance you guys are so helpful!

Hi, yes this is something that often causes confusion with people learning Turkish. Your translation is correct. In this case the verb temizlemek has changed into a (verbal) noun ´temizlemeyi´ with an accusative suffix.

If you think of the meaning as ´the cleaning´ of the room, where ´the cleaning´ is an event (noun) rather than an action (verb).

Ages ago I read an explanation, which helped me understand better, that

temizlemek + accusative suffix (i) = temizlemei (k to mutation when followed by a vowel)

and over time I was told this had morphed into = temizlemeyi

Turkish Infinitive as an Object of a Verb

  • The infinitive being a noun can take suffixes:
  • Geçen hafta ödevimi yapmay覺 unuttum. [yapma-y覺 = the doing]
  • I forgot to do my homework last week.
  • Garajdan arabam覺 almay覺 unuttum. [alma-y覺 = the taking]
  • I forgot to pick up (take) my car from the garage.
  • Ali, sana söylemeyi unuttu. [söyleme-yi = the telling]
  • Ali forgot to tell you.
  • Affedersin, seni aramay覺 unuttuk.
  • We´re sorry, we forgot to call you.
  • Filmi izlemeyi unuttum.
  • I forgot to watch the film.
  • Kediyi beslemeyi unuttum.
  • I forgot to feed the cat.
  • Mehmet´i sormay覺 unuttunuz
  • You forgot to ask Mehmet.
  • Kap覺y覺 kapamay覺 unuttum.
  • I forgot to close the door.
  • Pencereyi açmay覺 unuttular.
  • They forgot to open the window.
  • Pencereyi açmamay覺 unuttular. [açma-ma-y覺 = the NOT opening]
  • They forgot NOT to open the window.

The way 襤 learned it is: When a verb is followed by another verb we replace the k in mek/mak of the first verb with the accusative (y+ i, 覺)  directive (y+ a, e) or ablative(den, dan). The choice  of of the suffix depends on the second verb

Example: nefret etmek --> den, dan

襤n you example :

Temizlemeyi bittirdi

Bitmek needs accusatif so we drop k in temizlemek and add yi

襤t´s like in french  when a verb is followed by another verb the second one should be at infinitif form

The only verb that is an exception to this rule is istemek

We can say "gitmek istiyorum"
