Hello. I have been following the saga of the two Cumhuriyet journalists who have been imprisoned since November. Here is my attempt to translate an open letter written by Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Can Dündar. I hope I have done justice to his thoughts, which I think are important. 

Türkler misafirperverdir.

Turks are hospitable.

Çok övündükleri bu özellik büyük oranda cana yakınlıklarından kaynaklansa da kısmen de dayaktan sakınma içgüdüsünün sonucudur.

If this characteristic in which they take pride arises in great proportion from their geniality, it is also partly a result of the instinct to avoid a thrashing. 

Çünkü Türkler misafirin yanında çocuk dövmezler. Dayakçı babalardan en sık duyulan söz, “Şu misafirler gitsin, ben sana gösteririm”dir.

Because Turks do not beat children in the company of guests. The remark often heard from fathers who are beaters: "Let those guests go, I will show you."

Bu tehditle büyümüş çocuklar için misafir ziyareti, güvenli saatler demektir.

For children who grew up with this threat, a guest means hours of safety.

Geçen ay Antalya’daki G20 Zirvesi’nde 20 dünya liderini ağırlayan Türk hükümeti, bu geleneğe uyarak “ev içi baskı”ya kısa bir ara verdi.

Last month [November] at the G-20 summit in Antalya, conforming to this tradition, the Turkish government, which was entertaining 20 world leaders, took a short break from "domestic oppression." 

Misafirler gider gitmez de, hapisteki 20’yi aşkın gazetecinin arasına bizleri de kattı. İnsan, çoktandır bir “global köy” haline gelen yerküremizde, bu tür despotik uygulamaların gizli kalamayacağını, tepkiyle karşılanacağını düşünüyor.

As soon as the guests went, it added us among the more than 20 journalists in prison. A decent person thinks this type of despotic actions will not remain secret and will be met with a response in our world, which has already become a "global village." 

Durum pek öyle değil.

The situation is not much like that.

Misafirlerin, kapıdan çıkarken işittikleri çığlık seslerine, dayakçı ortakla ilişkilerini bozmamak adına kulak tıkamaları...

The guests´ ignoring the sound of screams that they hear while going out the door in the name of not ruining their relations with the beater partner ...

Kendi evlatlarına layık görmedikleri bir muamele komşunun çocuklarına yapıldığında çıkarları gereği görmezden gelmeleri...

The guests´ going out and ignoring the reality when a behavior is done to the neighbor´s children that they do not consider proper for their own children ...

Geçen hafta sonu aynen böyle oldu.

Last weekend was exactly like this.

Türk istihbarat teşkilatının illegal olarak Suriye’ye silah taşıyan TIR’larını haber yaptığımız için 26 Kasım’da hapse atıldık. 29 Kasım’da Avrupa Birliği-Türkiye zirvesi toplandı. Bir mektupla 28 Avrupa liderine -tutuklu gazeteciler adına- Batı uygarlığının düşünce - ifade - basın özgürlüğü gibi değerlerini hatırlattık.

We were thrown in prison on Nov. 26 for reporting the Turkish intelligence organization´s TIR trucks that took weapons to Syria as illegal. On Nov. 29, the European Union-Turkey summit was convened. In a letter, we reminded the 28 European leaders, on the behalf of detained journalists, of values such as Western civilization´s freedom of thought, expression and the press.

Brüksel’deki zirveye girerken çoğunun bir cebinde bizim mektubumuz vardı; öbür ceplerinde ise Avrupa’ya gelmesini istemedikleri mültecilere bekçilik yapması için Türkiye’ye vermeyi kararlaştırdıkları 3 milyar Avro...

As they entered the summit in Brussels, most had our letter in one pocket. In the other pocket was 3 billion euros that they had agreed to give to Turkey for its standing guard over the refugees that they did not want coming to Europe. 

Sonuçta sağ cepteki para, sol cepteki mektubu unutturdu doğal olarak...

In the end, the money in the right pocket naturally made them forget the letter in the left pocket ... 

Bir “win-win” memnuniyeti yayan basın toplantısını ve Türkiye’ye AB kapısının yeniden açılmasını hücremizdeki televizyondan acı bir tebessümle izledik.

We watched with a bitter smile on the television in our cell the press conference that broadcast the satisfaction of a "win-win" and the E.U.´s door again being opened to Turkey.

En temel hakların hiç dile getirilmemesinden siyasi dersler çıkardık.

We extracted political lessons from the most basic rights never having been brought up.

Avrupa, parasını verip kendine uzakta bir toplama kampı kiralamıştı.

Europe had given the money to rent a concentration camp far from itself.

Ankara, parasını alıp siyasi ayıplarını unutturmuştu.

Ankara had taken the money and made them forget the political disgrace.

Şimdi “Batı standartlarında” inşa edilen tecrit hücremizde, babamızın misafirle birlikte dövdüğü çocuklar gibiyiz.

Now, in our isolation cell built "on Western standards," we are like children that our father and the guests both beat.

Yine de misafirperveriz.

Nevertheless we are hospitable.

Tek tek gelin. Bekleriz.

Come one by one. We are expecting you.
