I was given a handwritten note by a woman I see every day begging on an Edinburgh Street - I know her main language is Turkish and believe the note is in turkish - but possibly phonetically spelled.

Can anyone hazard a translation?? To add an additional complication, the writing was hard to decipher in places

Many thanks

are you sure she is turkish? it sounds more like a googletranslate translation, and for the most part it doesn`t make any sense.

Hi Fensai

thanks for looking at that.

Not sure of her original nationality but undertand she had been living in Istanbul and she has certainly said Turkish is the language she uses. My impression from her writing is that she is barely literate and is probably writing phonetically - certainly when she writes it is done very laboriously.

I had tried putting it into google translate but as you say it made little sense. I thought it might be possible that someone who spoke Turkish might be able to decipher words from the sounds.

best wishes

Robin

I think your guess is correct, from what I can see it looks like a phonetic attempt at Turkish using English letter sounds.

The first part seems to say I don´t know that much English, although not in a normal way (to me), but I´m not Turkish Smile

Ben bilmiyorum Ingilizce o kadar (I am not knowing English that much)

çok fakirim (I am very poor)

çocuklar覺m eim? Onur? (my children, my partner/husband Onur)

benim için (for me) çok (many/ a lot)

襤stanbul´da burada (In Istanbul and here)

verdiler (they gave)

They gave much for me in Istanbul and here

Bir apartman oturum (I live in a apartment)

çocuklar覺m ve annem (my mother and children)

k覺z覺m (my daughter)

I´ll try to decipher the rest later, something about she had 3 operations

sana çok teekkürler (many thanks to you)

Thank you very much for working away at that - what you have translated makes sense in terms of what I know - she has three children, her mother has recently joined her in Scotland and i believe her elder daughter has a heart complaint that she has had some treatement for.

Anything else you can decipher much appreciated.

best wishes

Thanks so much for working that out - when I put your version into google translate (not being a Turkish speaker myself) it at least begins to make a degree of sense.

I know Google translate can produce some surpriging results but what emerges is:

I do not know much English . Very poor. Let kids all the things they have for me . My wife (?) Not in Istanbul. They gave an apartment here . I´m sitting my children and my mother. My daughter and two boys everything for me? ...... my father died. Married for 12 years . Let me so sick . There are 3 surgery in me and I can not tell it. Severe / the surgery was raw . I do not drink it . I live for her. ............ Thank you very much I loved you like . I loved you a lot

Let me so sick -> Ben de çok hastay覺m. -> I am also very sick

the surgery was raw -> çier ameliyat oldu -> it was liver surgery

I do not drink it ??? -> ben onun için ya覺yorum ??? -> I am living because of this (i.e. the surgery)
