Hi,
I have been to Marmaris twice now and I love it. It is very built up and lots of tourists in the summer, I am english and I am sorry to say that a lot of the english tourists are are horrible, they drink too much and are very rude. My friend said to go to Icmeler which is a little further down the coast as it is much nicer. It does depend on what you want if you like lots of bars and shops Marmaris is the place to be. There are some nice Turkish restaurants out of the tourist areas but you need to find a local person as they are off the beaten track. My friend took me to a fantastic place near Cleopatra Bay you sit by the river and watch the fish and the turtles but it is hard to find.

Go and visit the people are the best when you get to know them.

Hi

I was in Marmaris a few weeks ago. Even in mid-October, Marmaris is very busy and absolutely full of British tourists.

I didn't much like the profusion of restaurants serving "Full English Breakfast" and shop after shop all selling the same fake bags, fake T-shirts etc.

However, the Old Town, Marmaris Castle and the Harbour are charming. We visited the Ali Baba cafe in the Old Town a couple of times - you can have a turkish breakfast and play backgammon, the staff are wonderfully friendly, plus they had some newborn kittens, which delighted my kids

We only stayed in Marmaris for 2 days and then moved over to Icmeler Old Village, which is a bit quieter. It really depends on what you're looking for in a holiday - I like to experience a different culture and get to know local people, but in Marmaris I kind of felt I may as well still be in the UK (except it wasn't raining lol). However, I have a friend who just loves to shop, and has been to Marmaris several times, so I guess it's horses for courses

Cheers
Jo

I completely agree with you Jo.

My sister and her (now) husband were living in Marmaris for 3 months so I went to visit in August for 5 days before heading on to çamyuva in Antalya.

Although Marmaris was nice, I really don't like seeing signs like "Full English Breakfast" or "Lorry Driver Breakfast" (both of which, shockingly, include bacon and pork sausages).

At points it was like being in Blackpool or Brighton (but with sun). Obviously some people like that kind of holiday but if you are interested in travelling and seeing different cultures then make sure you see the 'Turkish' Marmaris too!

We went to Turnunç two months ago which is a bit further round the coast from Marmaris and over the mountain road from Içmeler. This was our first vist to Turkey. Our first impression of Marmaris was during the transfer to our hotel at night and seeing places called "Lancashire Hot Spot" and "The Greasy Spoon" (I kid you not!) made me wonder if I was going to regret the choice of holiday destination!!!

But once we arrived at our hotel in the hills above Turunç I had a totally different opinion of the country. Had I been staying in Marmaris there would be no way I would be wanting to go back and certainly not here learning the language.....

Personally I think it is a great pity that this part of a wonderful country has sold its soul out to tourism but I suppose that such things are inevitably and necessary for the economy.

We did visit Marmaris during our stay and found the old town interesting and the bazzaar worth wandering around - it is perhaps the best thing about the town other than it being easy to get out of by both boat and dolmus!!! I am glad I visited for a few hours but wouldn't rush back there again unlike Turunç where we booked to return as soon as we got back to England.

We hired a car for a few days whilst we were there and visited a number of towns including Datça and Bozborum and they were all far more "Turkish" than even the most traditional parts of Marmaris. Maybe it is just me, but if I go to another country I want to experience life in that county. I don't want to see a poor imitation of my homeland!!!

bod,

This is the most realistic observation/determination on Turkey that I have ever read, as a foreign user's expression, on this site. I was really influenced!

Please do not misunderstand me......
I love the United Kingdom and I am proud to be English. I have also fallen in love with Türkiye, its culture and its people.

I just do not think that Marmaris is representative of England which it seems to imitate. And perhaps more important because of this imitation, Marmaris has lost nearly all that makes it good about being a town in Türkiye!

Cheers, Bod

If I misunderstood you, I apologize to you. But I was serious at what I have said. Well, may I use your expression by changing it a little, by your leave now?

I want to see neither a poor nor a perfect imitation of your homeland!

Greetings.
