At an altitude of 1,750 meters, Kars is lying at the foot of Kars Kale, the impressive citadel. The city was founded at the eastern side of the Kars river by the Urartians as Asteghani. Kars is also known as the "Caucasus Gate" of Eastern Anatolia.
