Seleukia
Seleukia
In Anatolia there are many ancient cities bearing the names of the kings of the Hellenistic Selukos State. One of them is Pamphylia’s Seleukia and it is located around 90km from Antalya and 20km from Manavgat. In 3rd century BC the city was founded as an acropolis. The place of city foundation is the top of a hill surrounded by cliffs an three sides, which could be reached only from the south. Agora and city centerare situated to the west of this hill. Seleukia became the shelter for many intellectuals, scients and artists of Side and all they continued their studies of science and art here during the period when Side was under the control of the bandits and pirates. The only importance of the city which had almost no commercial income was that it had a good defence system and was located at a strategic point. Seleukia city became small and it eventually turned to ruins as this strategic importance dissappeared. (Location: Manavgat)
