A retrospective exhibition of Josef Kodudelka, the living legend of photography, is at Pera Museum, Tepebaşı. The exhibition will stay open until April 13, 2008.
Koudelka is a Czech photographer who was born in Moravia in 1938. He started taking picture with a bakelite camera when he was 12. Koudelka began his career as an aeronautical engineer,He opened his first exhibition, which is composed of his photos that he printed in black and white, at Semafor Theater in Prague in 1961.
The artist’s photographs are on display in Turkey for the first time and are exhibited in three floors of Pera Museum and in six themes: Beginnings, Theater, Gypsies, Invasion, Exile and Chaos.
The photos of the theme “Beginnings†are the rare and original examples selected from his first exhibition, which were on display when he was 23 years old.
“Gypsies†exhibit, the ethnic characteristics, traditions or social habits of gypsies living in Slovakia and Romania, as well as their bohemian life style. These photos were taken between 1962 and 1970.
The photos exhibited under the theme of “Invasion†are composed of the photos taken during the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1986. Worldwide famous photography agency Magnum published Koudelka’s pictures.
Koudelka, whose an immigrant himself, expresses his feelings of nostalgia, longing and alienation with “Exilesâ€. This period covers the 17 years he lived stateless until he received French citizenship in 1987.
“Theater†is composed of the photos he shot for Divadlo (Theater) Magazine and Divadlo Zu Branou (The Theater Behind the Door).
“Chaos†displays the photos he took with a panoramic (6 x 19) camera, which he first used in 1986.
350 original photos of Josef Koudelka will be on display at Pera Museum until April 13, 2008 everyday, except Mondays.
