TAMLAMALAR (COMPOUND NOUNS)

To her....who likes orange colour..

In Turkish, a compound noun, called tamlama, is the smallest word unit that carries no judgement. It is made up of two or more separete nouns or noun-originated words, and most of the time appears as separete nouns.

ad1 ad2

tamlama

Here the first noun is called tamlayan, and the second, tamlanan. The first element defines modifies, describes, or determines the second one, which carries the main meaning in a compound noun:

ad tamlaması

tamlayan      tamlanan

demir             kapı

ağacın             dalı

köy           yaşantısı

şehrin          ışıkları

çocuğun         umutları

güneşin      doğuşu

As seen above, a noun compound doesn't necessarily take suffixes, it may perfectly be without any suffix; however it can take only the genitive suffix "-in" to its first element and/or the possessive suffix "-i" for the third person singular to its second element.

Sometimes the two nouns, however, join together and make one word compound nouns:

tamlayan  +  tamlanan = compound noun

                                   kül      +   kedisi        = külkedisi

                                  kızıl      +   ırmak        = kızılırmak

                                   kır       +   çiçeği        = kırçiçeği

                                  kafa     +   tası           = kafatası

                                   dil       +   bilgisi         = dilbilgisi

I. Tamlama Türleri (Types of Compound Nouns)

a. Belirtili Ad Tamlaması (Defined Compound Nouns)

These are the compound nouns both of whose elements take a suffix. In this type of compound nouns, there is always a specific relationship like 'possession' between the two nouns. The first noun takes the genitive suffix -(n*)in, while the second noun, -(s*)i, the possessive suffix for the third person singular. These suffixes may slightly vary, depending on the vowel harmony; thus a genitive suffix can be -(n)in, -(n)ın, -(n)un or -(n)ün, and the first person singular suffix, -(s)i, -(s)ı, -(s)u or -(s)ü.

* Both the n and s in the above brackets are the buffering letter.

belirtili ad tamlaması

                                                           (n)ın              (s)ı

                                                 ad1 + (n)in    ad2 + (s)i

                                                           (n)un             (s)u

                                                           (n)ün             (s)ü

"Bursa'nın şeftalisi pek ünlüdür."

"Bahçenin duvarı rengarenk."

"Elindeki dünün gazetesiydi."

"O düşlerimizin öykü."

"Bir okyanusun derinliği nasıl ölçülür?"

* Note that the words "su" and "ne" are two exceptions and don't suit the above rule.

"Ne güzel su-y-un tadı!"

"Bu alet su-y-un akışkanlığını ölçer."

"Ne-y-in resmini çizdin?"

"Ne-y-in ölçünü alacaksın?"

Defined compund nouns indicate:

* that an item belongs to the entire:

                                               Cyrano'nun burnu (kocaman.)

kapının kolu (kırık.)

ağacın dalı (bükülmüş.)

bilgisayarın işlemcisi (çok yavaş.)

* that a qualification/quality belongs to a being:

sporcunun zekisi (az bulunur.)

giysinin yenisini (giyerim.)

şarabın eskisini (seç.)

patatesin irisi (artık yetişmez bu bölgede.)

* that an action is performed by the subject or a state belongs to the subject or object:

kızın gülümsemesi (yapmacıktı.)

kuşun ölmesi (hepimizi çok üzdü.)

horozun ötmesi(yle uyandık o sabah.)

yaprakların dökülmesi (demek, sonbahar demektir.)

çocuğun sevinci (görülmeye değerdi.)

* In some of defined compound nouns, the first element is a personal pronoun, and accordingly the third person singular suffix "-i" replaces with appropriate personal suffixes where other personal pronouns are used:

"Benim hayallerim gerçek oldu."

"Senin sınavın çok mu zordu?"

"Onun düşüncesi yanlış."

"Kendisinin kalemi kırık."

"Bizim evimiz sokağın sonunda."

* Note that in defined compound nouns the first or the second element can also be a verbal noun, a clause or a sentence:

Verbal Noun:

Sabah koşmanın yararları (saymakla bitmez.)

Sigara içmenin zararları (mı dedin?)

Clause:

Sen giderken'in anlamı (sence ne olabilir?)

Eğer ölürsek'in çağrışımı (çok ürkütücü.)

Sentence:

Canlılar doğar, yaşar ve ölür'ün yorumu (gayet basit.)

Ne yapılabilir'in cevabı(nı bul hadi!)

b. Belirtisiz Ad Tamlaması (Undefined Compound Nouns)

Undefined compound nouns take a suffix to only the second noun, and the first noun is in nominative case. There is a rather general than specific relationship like "possession" between the two nouns.

belirtisiz ad tamlaması

                         (s)ı

ad1 + Ø   ad2 + (s)i

                           (s)u

                           (s)ü

sevmekØ korkusu (sardı heryanımı)

aşkØ acı (zor geçer.)

In this type of compound nouns; the first noun:

* indicates the type and function/purpose of the second one:

traş bıçağı     posta pulu

* describes what the second one is made of (or vice versa):

"Davranışlarında zenginim züppeliği gizliydi."

"Yardım edin! çığlığı-nı duymadın bile."

* the first noun can be a proper noun; and the second one, an adjective used as a noun. In this case, the qualification of the adjective, mostly bad one, is attributed by the speaker to the proper name.

Serpil delisi (X deli Serpil) Necdet alçağı (X alçak Necdet)

Osman ayı (X ayı Osman) Gamze edepsizi (X edepsiz Gamze)

Sinan dangalağı (X dangalak Sinan) Hasan soytarı (X soytarı Hasan)

"Volkan hayırsızı bizi unuttu."

"Murat züppesi-nin ne yaptığını gördün mü?"

densiz       densizi

hayırsız    hayırsızı

züppe       züppesi

şımarık    şımarığı

c. Takısız Ad Tamlaması (Compound Nouns with No Suffixes)

erkek kardeş    güzel kız    üzgün çocuk

kız kardeş    cahil adam    beyinsiz yaratık

The plural suffix "-ler" always precedes both the genitive suffix "-in" in the first element and the third person singular suffix "-i" in the second one.

* In defined compund nouns, both the first and second noun can be pluralized:

singular                     plural

uzak ülke    uzak ülke-ler

The suffixes of the noun cases come always after the first person singular suffix "-i" in the second noun.

"Ölüm acısı-n-ı yaşadım."

"Perdenin deseni-n-i çiz."

"Güneşin batışı-n-ı izledik sahilde."
