the suffix -dir - 3

We use "-dir" while we are talking about a general feature, too. 

 

oksijen (the oxygen), yakıcı (burning, caustic),

madde (1the substance, the matter, 2the entry, 3the material,...)

 

yakıcı madde (the caustic substance)

yakıcı bir madde (a caustic substance)

 

Oksijen yakıcı bir maddedir. (The oxygen is a caustic.) [that is a general feature of the oxygen]

 

çay (the tea) , Türk (Turk), en çok (most), tüketmek (to consume), içecek (the drink)

 

Türk+ler(plural)+in(genitive)---------->Türklerin (of the Turks)

tüket+dik+i(possessive)-------------->tükettiği [remember the pattern of "-dik"]

içecek+dir--------------------------->içecektir

 

Çay, Türklerin en çok tükettiği içecektir. (Tea is the drink the Turks consume most.) [a general condition has been told]

 

kamyon (the lorry), araba (the car), ağır (1heavy, 2difficult, 3slow,4..5..)

 

araba+dan(comparative)------------->araban (than the car)

ağır+dır----------------------------->ağırdır

 

Kamyon arabadan daha ağır. (The lorry is heavier then the car.)

Kamyon arabadan daha ağırdır. (A lorry is heavier than a car. [generally])

 

dede (the grandfather), sağır (deaf, unable to hear)

dede+m(possessive)----------------->dedem (my grandfather)

sağır+dır---------------------------->sağırdır

 

Dedem sağır. (My grandfather is deaf.)

Dedem sağırdır. (It is a general feature of my grandfather to be deaf.)
