No idea...but since there's no Q in the Turkish alphabet, I'm guessing that "neq" is not a Turkish word!

That guy's English is not up to scratch. Ignore him; his "informed" opinions about the evolution of a language that he has not yet mastered are of little use or value to anyone.

PS We use Swan's book as a reference text in the teacher training programme at Bilkent hazırlık. As far as I am aware, no-one here is advocating the "let them make it up as they go along" approach to English usage...

Thread: "of all time" or "of all times" ?

(There may be an American usage that I am unaware of)

However, in UK English "of all time" is the correct usage. There is no need to make "time" a plural - you could however say "of all ages", if you wished. "Of all time" literally means "since the beginning of time".

Hope this helps.

Quoting Boop:

I watched the eclipse on line, thanks to Alpha's link - so I guess one out two isn't bad, as to the boyfriend - do we have to wait for another 100 years for that too??

...only 54 years til another eclipse in Turkey...

Should still have (at least some of) your own teeth - all is not lost!

I was on top of a hill - just me and my boyfriend - near Üçhisar. Clear blue skies. The eclipse was amazing.

AMAZING.

Anyone else catch it?

I heard the solar eclips makes the risk of earthquakes higher. Is this true? And how does this work?

There was an earthquake not long after the last total eclipse in Turkey - I think that's why people are talking about there being a link. But as Kadir says, there are many more earthqukes than there are eclipses - there's little evidence for a connection.

Capadocia here I come!

5- Sickness: Certain sicknesses, such as epilepsy, hysteria etc., constitute a bar to marriage.

Wow! Are these the only illnesses that prevent people from marrying? What happens if someone becomes an epileptic after marriage? Is it annulled? I'm neither epileptic nor planning to marry in Turkey but this is very interesting!

John has 2 sisters and 1 brother
Ann has 1 brother and 1 sister

From the following statements find out the name of Ann's sister!

Mary has 1 brother and 1 sister

Yup, it's Mary - when you look at it this way (above) the rest is just padding. Pleasantly diverting tho - ta Ms C.
