Hmmm....I haven´t seen this, but a Moroccan lady was telling me about it the other day. She was both scandalized and titilated about it. She also commented on how handsome the main male character was.

Well Barba... You have heard of propaganda, public relations, brainwashing, have you not?

For some reason, and I think I have a good idea why, there is constantly a popular enemy to rally everyone against.....while those pulling the strings others rob the shirts off the rest of us.

I´m not going to dignify this ugly and hateful thing by counting who did the most ugly deeds. Lord knows, there are plenty to go around.  It´s an old tactic, divide and rule. Nothing new here, been going on a long time.

I REFUSE to hate anyone based on the group they belong to. In fact, I don´t want to hate anyone. I do hate deeds. The universe is just too small for this, we are all interdependant on one another, so let´s get along.

True, but I find it strange that when people debate the reasons behind the negative image, they only blame the media. If people don´t acknowledge that there are bad muslims who give all muslims a bad name, they will never be able to battle the whole problem of negative image. Extremes always make the best tv.

Excellent post Elisabeth. It´s an old tactic called divide and rule It has been used for millennia and will probably go on as long as humans exist. It´s a telling commentary on the malleability of society...."when will they ever learn?"

I agree with you in part, barba.  Hoever, I think much of the islamaphobia comes from the media as well.  You ONLY hear about the extremists...never about the average muslim.  It makes for good ratings when a news entity reports only on extreme behavior and radicals.  I have a feeling that in Arab countries they are only seeing the worst of us too.  As a matter of fact, I see very few news reports about human beings doing good or showing compassion for other human beings.

Maybe I am naive, but I feel all people, on all sides, are being manipulated for the sake of politics and TV ratings.

People like to simplify things by calling names. What is/was a Hippie? I actually found Wikipedia has the best definition I´ve seen thus far. The term Hippie came from hip...that is being aware of things....it evolved from the Beats.

It has been wrongly associated with drugs and wanton sex, however great social movements came out of it. Civil Rights, Anti-War, the Femminist movement really took on steam as a result of the freedom to choose to have children via the birth control pill, Ecology movements sprung forth during this time as a response to the book Silent Spring in 1962, Adele Davis was an early pioneer in the natural unprocessed food movement whose book " Eat Right to Keep Fit" was a major key in making people aware of what was going on with their food and the consequent movement we see today.

This was the time when the children from WWII who were the first to grow up with the threat of world destruction came of age.  This is the generation that grew up after the Nurenberg Trials where I was just following orders would no longer be used as a defense. This is when the term "Make Love Not War" was coined. It did not mean go XXXX your head off....it meant love one another....don´t hate and kill each other....

This led to a rejection of sensless wars and the large anti-war protests. ..........I could go on.......but my point is........To reduce this time to being identified with drugs and sex shows ignorance of historic events that actually happened.

...............BTW Pink Floyd was a 60s band...Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, the Beattles were known for good music, not drugs. There have always been drug users......

The point I was trying to make is NOT that Amy Whinehouse is a hippy, but that she would have been called a hippy if she was alive and kicking in the 1970s. Most of the artists from that decade would have been called giant junkies by now, and kicked into rehab. Even the golden oldies who were alive those days admit that they can hardly remember those decades, what they did and what they said because they were stoned out of their minds back than. We like to view the past in rose coloured glasses.

Knowing what to order is a big help.

Mercimek köftesi is a nice vegan dish. Tarhana corbasi is another. Perhaps some Turks or others who are familiar with vegan foods will chime in.

Yum, this looks great. I´ll have to try it. I´m trying to fix low carb foods though. Potatos are pretty high carb, so I think I´ll try barley or bulgar instead of potatos.

I recently learned how to make this, and my recipe is different.

It is:

1 part red lentils

2 1/2 water

1 part bulgar

salt to taste

one chopped yellow onion

1/8th part tomatoe paste or sauce, or fresh peeled tomatoes

black pepper

cumin (fresh ground seeds are best)

olive oil about 1/4 cup

I like a bite to my food, so I put chili pepper in. and the amount depends on who will be eating. Some people are very sensitive to heat in food.

directions

put red lentils in pot with water and salt and boil about 10 minutes on low boil

chop onion and put in pan to saute with olive oil

put cumin & black pepper in pan with onion and oil

put tomatoe in and mix with other ingredients

put bulgar in and mix to get other ingrediends to cover

Transfer everything into pan with red lentils and mix well.

At this point I have added the rest of the water. It´s best if the water is very hot.

Cover and let sit about an hour. Check to see if bulgar has absorbed the water and is tender. I like it al dente. Some turn heat on to speed the process.

At this point I like to add cilantro  I think the Turkish word is kişniş.

Here is what Wikipedia says about it, perhaps someone will give the proper Turkish word.

Take mix in hand and squeeze into cigar type pieces and place on plate with fresh raw romain lettuce.

eat on lettuce leave.

Yum....if anyone has variations, it would be nice to read about them. This is a good for vegans.

............ February 1979 after a national newspaper revealed that a 35-year-old Indian woman was examined by a male doctor at Heathrow to check whether she was in fact a virgin.

The Home Office initially denied that any internal examination had taken place.

The woman was offered £500 “in recognition” of distress caused but there was no apology.

Source: here

No apology and only £500??? What a disgrace.
