Thread: Visiting Family & gift?

Something to eat is always welcome. Just be careful it doesn´t have pork or alchohol products in it.

It would be best to find something about the family so as to know what they would like. I wouldn´t stress too much about it though, Turkish people appreciate the effort and are very gracious when receiving a gift.

The nice thing about food is it doesn´t have to be dusted or polished. Most homes don´t have a lot of knick knacks.

Hi

I am going to Turkey to meet my friend´s family soon and I am wondering what kind of gift I should get them - I am really confused so any suggestions would be great!

Private is prvate and I really don´t want to hear or see any sordid details of any politicians  private life.

I HATED the whole fiasco of the Monica scandal. What a national disgrace!

Nice, thanks I like those. Have you heard of Glen Velez? In his latest pieces his music is too Indian for my taste, but in this one he´s more unique.

Thread: Calls for more child rights as Turkey marks Children´s Day

Interesting, I´ve never seen a Turk beating a child, and I´ve been around a lot of Turkish people. Guess I just am around a different crowd.

In the US I´ve seen quite a bit of what I consider abuse, but mustly what I´ve seen are  incredibly rude children children who have been indulged in the extreem.

It has always been amazing when visiting Turkey meeting such well mannered children.

Quoting barba_mama

I agree. It´s not in all Turkish families, but I have seen a lot of beating of kids. And not a small corrective slap on the hand to scare them, but a serious beating with belts, shoes, etc. On the other hand, I have also seen kids in Turkey that should get one of those corrective slaps. One kid pushed me hard to the side the other day, because I was blocking his view of a bunch of toys. His mom didn´t say a damn thing and just continued buying him toys. Tsss....

Thread: About Armenian Issue

The issue, as I see it, is one of Armenians wanting reparation, not simply recognition.IOW there are  monetary and territorial demands that go with recognition.

Armenian Genocide Reparations

I have not read the complete article referenced above...but it will give you an idea of why it´s such a sticky issue.

There is also the matter of "greater Armenia" ????

Greater Armenia

Quoting barba_mama

What happened in The Netherlands is not what is written in that piece quoted before. Those party members were not simply kicked out because they said "I don´t believe there was an Armenian genocide". It is a small part of a very big story, and they didn´t simply say "this is what I believe" but made a big fuss about it. A bit like sii

The problem with some of the statements made earlier is that people seem to think that the Armenian issue will cause people to see Turks today as killers. I don´t think Germans are bad people because of the Holocaust! And to be honest, I don´t know anybody who judges the Germans they meet today based on what happened during World War 2. And the Armenian issue even happened decades before that! What influences people´s view of Turks today much more than the Armenian issue is what they see on holiday, unintegrated people they see in big cities in their own countries, integrated people that they have direct contact with, and today´s Turkish politics.

Thread: American Girls are the Worst!

I have to agree with Elisabeth here. Read what you wrote. It´s abusive and insulting and you wonder why American women are cold to you? You want to marry someone because you have decided to stay in the US? How romantic of you.

Actually, most Americans are very charmed and intrigued by foreigners. If you have a problem, it´s not the American women (of which there is an almost infinite variety) it´s you.

Why would you want to stay here anyway, if you find the women so unpleasant?{#emotions_dlg.get_you}

Quoting Elisabeth

Let´s get a few things straight, newquaker because you are hardly an innocent victim in this thread.

Just so you understand - these are the first comments in this thread that are rude and they are all made you YOU:

 American Girls are the Worst

“Americans, on the other hand, have always been an impossibility for me. First of all, they are ignorant and/or prejudiced against Turks and also unwilling to bother to even think about anything serious with me. This is actually a general pattern of behavior here against foreigners. The so called hospitality is completely fake and does not exist on personal level, and once they are done with their jobs, they pay zero attention to you.”

This is why I thought you are talking about yourself and not foreigners or general attitudes towards foreigners:

“I have been in the US for 3 years, I still hardly have any American friends. Don’t get me wrong, I have many friends, but the vast majority are either other foreigners or Turks like me.”

“I´d wish to engage with an American woman if I would continue my life in America.” n

“I´d like to meet and date American girls and maybe marry one someday. Now that I will live in the US, it only makes sense. I heard lots of love stories of Americans marrying Turks, but it hardly ever happens around me and I have had no luck so far.”G

You are not exactly an innocent victim with people picking on you.  Your very first post was unnecessarily rude.  If you want to make friends with Americans, you need to change your mind about them first of all.  People, and not just Americans, can feel when they are being judged and have a tendency to ignore/avoid you

Thread: Obtaining Schengen visas riddled with difficulties for Turkish citizens

Hmmm...interesting. Given the population growth in most European countries, one would think you would be happy to have a few Turks there. Keep going the way you are, you might just disappear....Smile

I have a slight problem with this discussion. There is always a pointing finger towards the Schengen countries with their rules. Yes, the process should be more respectfull, and yes, in some cases the rulings about visas are unfair. But I never hear Turkish people talk about the large number of illegal Turks walking around the Schengen countries who came there on a tourist visa and never left. How do you think that should be solved?

Ewww...sure sounds unfriendly. I would not want to go there, and certainly would do as much as possible to avoid it. I didn´t know such a thing existed. It seems rather rude to me.

Could you be looking for makam names like Hicaz, Rast, Hüzzam etc? Although makams exist in greater diversity in Classical Turkish Music, there are makams in Turkish Folk Music too. Makams are musical patterns that determine whether certain notes are to be played as sharp or flat.

I think Vineyards probably has a lead on what you are looking for. Maybe this link will help.

Quoting Daydreamer

Thanks for asking Yilgun, I´m still alive and I do log in here every now and then. However, as I had my second son 3 weeks ago, I hardly have enough time to post or follow a debate. I just leave a quickie, check my PMs and off I go

I´ll return when things get less chaotic and quieter here
