I have been reading the thread requesting members to post the 25 all time favourite poets and it gave me the idea for this thread. When I read poetry I often think of lyricists crafting their lines too. For instance, I have a Turkish friend (you know who you are!) who is an enormous fan of the lyrics of Roger Waters (Pink Floyd).

I would love to learn of members' favourites, especially turkish as I would like to learn more. It would be helpful to give the era or context in which they were written.

I listened to him as a young teenager and before that this Scottish guy . . . lovely lyrics, which I've posted elsewhere too I'm afraid.

People likened him to Dylan and actually they were influenced by the same people eg Woody Guthrie and Ramblin Jack Elliott.

Bob Dylan - especially his early songs. Leonard Cohen and, currently, Alex Turner, lead singer of Arctic Monkeys (I am far too old to admit this but I find his lyrics so clever and funny!)

My original post invited Turkish lyricists . I want to be enlightened.

Presently, I like James Blunt's new album "All the lost Souls". He comments on the effects of fame and in his song "I can't hear the music" there is a line "and if I can't hear the music and the audience is gone, I'll dance here on my own" - what he is saying is, he loves his music so much, he would be doing it whether or not he was famous and he will continue even if the 'fame' thing disappears.
