I am slowly to arrange my travel details and would really appreciate some help from people who have used Turkish airlines before especially when it comes to the baggage weights and restrictions.

I understand that Turkish airlines do have a greater weight allowance for your first piece of baggage which is 32KG, I know British Airways is only 23KG, which infact is very small allowance. I would like to take possibly three cases including my allowance of the first piece of luggage which would be 32KG. I am quite certain that the two excess pieces of baggage would be both equalling another 32KG each thus the total would be 96KG. The first case would be my allowance and then the second and third pieces of luggage would be the excess can anyone give me some help with regards to the extra two pieces of luggage, they would be excess baggage. What do you mean? For as far as I know, you have to pay for each kilo that you take excess, and its never really cheap. Also, for some companies, when pieces are havier than 30 or 35 kgs, you have to pay more because the staff isnt allowed to handle such heavy stuff for health reasons.

Maybe someone else can give a more specific answer, but if I were you Id be prepared to pay a high bill on luggage!

Maybe you would be better to contact the airline you are going with to ask them these questions and then you would know for certain what allowence you are allowed and what they charge for extra luggage and even ask them for written conformation. This may save you having problems at the time of flying.

I travelled with Turkish airlines in Dec, and my weight allowance was over at 26kg, i didnt get charged anything extra, but got a heavy sticker on my case...... When you book your ticket ask them or enquire about sending your excess luggage by cargo with Turkish airlines.....
In feb, travelled with Onur air, a lady who was next to me in the queue, was 34 kg main luggage and 7 kg in hand luggage, she was made to buy another bag, had to take from main luggage and hand luggage, and was charged £6 per kilo excess... plus holding up the queue to sort things out...... Just a word of warning and to save your embarressment

34kg seems a lot of lugguage allowance, ours is only usually about 20kg we often use Onur airline too. In january my luggage weighed in at 26kg didn't get charged excess just a heavy sticker applied, which suprised me as the seem to be quite strict regarding this, but perhaps i was just lucky it was new years eve. Still i wouldn't go over to much because as Kate sais it could be very costly at £6.00kg. Good luck

You should probably contact the airline,don't quote me on this but when i have flown with THY in the past they have always been very accomodating regarding luggage. I have been allowed up to about 34 or 35 kg's i think which is a lot! However i am not sure how many bags you are permitted to take on with you.As other people have said i think you would be best getting official information as you will be wishing to avoid a huge bill! I was charged excess once at Istanbul and i was about 3 or 4 kg's over.I have never been charged when leaving the UK however.Good luck!! These things are sent to test us i am sure but it will ultimately be worth all of it!

Thanks so much for all your replies I appreciate all of them, I think best course of action is to contact the airline in plenty of time to discuss this further. I have all our wedding presents to take and my clothes and belongings, well some at least

Yea it must be a nightmare,i guess the best strategy would be try not to take things that you don't need.Its so easy to fall into the trap of being sentimental but just think you can make new memories and aquire new posessions.The future is where its at! Be brave with your packing! good luck again.

Chance of having a mad bomber in your plane is 1 in 500. With your own bomb safely tucked away, the chance of having two mad bombers on the same flight reduces down to only,

It is not just THY policy, but also the airport you are flying from.

THY are more flexible flying out of Istanbul, than Heathrow.

In both cases the rule is 20kg total plus hand luggage.

But flying out of Istanbul they normally let you get away with 5 or 6 kg over without charging.

Heathrow is strict on baggage handling, and charges them fines if they allow a lot of heavy weight, so they are not so forgiving.

The best way is to send the bags THY cargo. It is a lot cheaper per kg. You make an arrangement with THY before hand.
If you want the bags to be on the same plane as you, you have to drop them at the airport (might be the cargo terminal) some time before the flight (normally 24 hours). Then you can pick them up in Turkey when you get off the plane.
If you just bring them when you check in they arrive in Turkey a few days later.
