A wonderful web site that aims at initiating a debate about this and which is a long needed voice of criticism of the pornification of our culture and everything around! This topic is especially important for Turkey, since porn is even more widespread and normalized there then it is in the US!

In my opinion, drive it underground, problem gets worse! And it ranks a bit below drug and gun /knife crimes and do you see these problems getting any better?
Pornography is not just about using women; it also about using men. I dont see anyone complaining about the exploitation of males in gay porn? I am sure that goes on too. So once the individuals stop allowing themselves to become involved in the "industry" and often it goes hand in hand with drugs then the problem resolves itself, or does it? Another question for debate.

Of course it is. Regular daily papers with NEWS contain pornography sections in them and their main pages always contain at least a couple half-naked pictures of women. It's truly disgusting.

It is not about driving it underground but about initiating a debate in the society about pornography. Right now this debate is completely erased off the table because the pornographers have done everything to shut it down. And not only that pornography producers make a lot of money, but also seemingly different companies like General Motors or AT&T distribute it and make a lot of profit off of it. So there is a lot of money put into not publicizing any criticism of pornography.

Porn is disgusting and counterproductive where ever it is. I don't know where some here have been, but I definitly see more of it in the US than in Turkey.
By that I mean what can be observed without trying. The Internet is particularly a problem. Are people really that interested in that garbage?

And I don't know where you have been Alameda, because porn is on the streets in Turkey. I could see NAKED pictures on all magazine stands in Istanbul, which doesn't happen in the US.
A small example: superonline is a turkish internet provider company and guess what - they have a porn section on their web site. Something like that doesn't happen in the US.

Maybe that depends on where you live. In NYC you see it everywhere, in the SF Bay Area, it's all over too. Istanbul, being a large metropolis, probably follows the model of other large metropolitan areas.

Possible, but from my own experience, porn is not put out on the streets in the US as much as it is in Istanbul. I was literally walking on the streets in IST and looking at naked pictures of women. It has NEVER happened to me in the US, even in NYC.

Interesting, you see what you see and I see what I see. I never was looking for it, but saw it anyway pretty open and in your face.

If you are talking about naked women and men on fronts of magazines the only city that I have been to where you won't see this is London! It is serupticiously kept on the top shelf of the newsagents. But there are still plenty of problems within the porn industry. Magazines are just a very small part of it.
Go to Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Hamburg, etc etc and "porn mags" are openly sold on the streets in full view of children.

Personally I don't consider a few photos in newspapers to be porn! I think that is a complete over reaction.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but there are bigger fish to fry, and not on the top of "things I don't like about the world" list.

Other then people actually murdering each other, I think oppression, abuse, exploitation is the second most urgent problem in the world. The issue of pornography and sexual exploitation is very tightly linked to the larger culture of mysogyny and oppression..

I have checked their site and cannot locate it.

Yes there are racey pictures in the newspapers. But I never have seen porn out in the open in Istanbul. I know there are some shops in Taksim and another in Levent but I disagree that it is all over Istanbul open to see.

Yes, depends on your definition of porn. I think the word "Racy" sums it up in this instance!

Maybe this is what she meant
http://vidomido.superonline.com/video/92.html
There is a 18+ section, but what it caught my attention is that even that is says 18+ there is no restrictions at all, anyone from any age can access these videos. I think there should be somehow a kind of censorship.
p.s. no wonder why some male turkish friends really like that site, i think they find it very entertaining
