In two weeks time in a hospital in Ankara 27 newborns died. A union claims they died because of lack of hygienical circumstances and neglectance of staff members.

The hospital says most babies were born too early and died of complications and not because they suffered from infections they got during their admittance. The Turkish ministry of Healthcare has announced an investigation to the deaths on Monday.

How sad. It is difficult enough to take care of premature babies in the best of circumstances...I can´t imagine how difficult it must be if there isn´t enough staff or if you do not have the right supplies or equipment. Hopefully there was no wrong doing involved.

27 newborns within two weeks at the same hospital. Sounds very suspicious to me. Something is definately wrong with this picture. I hope the hospital and staff will be investigated.

Did they do an autopsy on these babies? This is so sad, don´t they have a normal burial for babies?

no info about autopsy and hospital has no burial for the baby, baby´s family will arrange the burial.i think none of those families did ask for the autopsy.

That is so sad. I would have thought that with so many, the hospital would have ordered autoposy´s on these babies to find out the REAL cause of death. What if its an epidemic? If this happened where I live, the media and the public would be going nuts demanding the cause.

Does this happen typically in Turkish Hospitals that so many babies die at once?

This is a bit off topic, but somewhat related. I knew a woman who had difficulty carrying to term for her first few pregnacies. In retrospect, it was probably because she wore a very tight corset.

She finally was able kept two (she said they were blue babies) alive in a shoe box in a compartment at the side of the oven. They grew up and had their own children, who had more children.

I saw their tiny baby dresses. They looked like doll clothes. This happened in the US in 1908.

Normally in the UK when an unexptectd death occurs, the coronor is informed and it is normally he/she who calls for the post mortum (autopsy in American!)although families can request an autopsy if they are not satisfied. This is a awful tragedy and I must agree, some sort of investigation should be held into the deaths.

 It says these babies where between 800gms (a bag of sugar) and 1200 gms (a bag of flour), they are incredibly small and even with sophisticated equipment I guess they would be lucky to survive.  There lungs would not be properly developed.  I think what also worries me though, is that fact there were 13 prem babies all born about the same time and they are born in a research hospital.

What should worry everyone is that is did not happen only in Ankara and Izmir but quoting Today´s Zaman:

´...a recent rise in infant deaths across Turkey, with five infants dying in Edirne, two in Manisa, seven in Kayseri, five in İstanbul, 47 in Ankara and 13 in İzmir...´

a total of 79 dead babies!!!

 Yes, and how incredible it is the number of low weight births. Why is this happening?  Poor nutrician, poor anti-natal care, complacency??  I also was quite amazed that the parents one baby who say they found out their baby had died through the newspaper, why were they not with their poorly child?

In the UK the normal weight for a new born is around  3 - 4 kg.

god this is awful..... it does seem a little suspect but the amount of premmie births in the first place is rather disturbing also {#lang_emotions_confused}

The chances of any baby this small living are very slim, but the fact that so many died at once needs looking into and also why so many women went into premature labour needs investigating.
