Quoting Elisa:

Movies I've seen so far and recommend:

* Hamam (Ferzan Özpetek)
* Karşı Pencere: the movie is in Italian. It stars the talented and dazzingly beautiful (the eyes!) actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno. Also directed by Ferzan Özpetek who lives in Italy.
* Duvara karşı (Gegen die Wand) directed by Fatih Akin
* Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul (also by Fatih Akin)

Oh and for peopling buying DVD's: compare prices with the ones at Play. I noticed that most of the time they are the cheapest by far!
(no, I'm not affiliated whatsoever )

There are similar sites like the one you mention. The one I use never mentions results from Play, even if it's the cheapest. So it's always best not to trust completely on those comparing sites

Merhaba!
I own "Journey of Hope" and I absolutely love it. Very sad, though. I own one called "Pahlevan", I believe...it's a little tedious showing so much wresting, but it's great for language and culture learning. I've seen one called "Uzak", which was interesting, but kind of artsy and not very dramatic.

One good movie which is about Turkey in a roundabout way, is a French film called "Monsieur Ibrahim" with Omar Sharif. He plays a Turkish shop owner living in Paris, but towards the end of the film he and a young boy take a trip to Turkey. The film is very touching.

OK, once when I was in Turkey, I watched an old black & white Turkish movie on TV late one night. Of course it did not have subtitles, but the movie was hilarious! I didn't catch it from the beginning, but it seemed to be about an American woman who had gone to Turkey looking for her lost brother who was an astronaut of some sort(!?). She was going door to door looking for him, and a couple of Turkish men were helping her (and flirting with her). One of the men was married and his wife kept chewing him out for flirting. It was a comedy, and I would DEARLY love to find this movie and watch it. A lot of it was in English because of the American woman...the Turkish men were trying to speak English to her. The movie seemed to be from the 1960's, maybe early 70's, black & white. I didn't undertand any Turkish at the time and it was still funny to me...I imagine now that I know more, I'd like it even more! If anyone has any idea what movie this might be, please let me know!

çok teşekkür edirim!
~Rene
