Can anyone recommend a really good and friendly language school in Izmir or Antalya? We are a group of three, we have accommodation, just need classes (let´s say, 4-6 hours per day).

Thanks!

Check the following websites. Both have Turkish language courses for foreigners in İzmir.

Thanks a lot! The point is, we wanted to avoid TOMER, because we´ve heard and read lots of bad reviews of their classes - being old fashioned and focusing mostly on grammar. Since we are both students of Turkish at the university, we don´t need more grammar! Instead, we would like to practice the living language.

As for the other link, I´ve just checked it and it seems that they have only an option of 6 hours per week - which is really too little. The same problem I´ve encountered with a nice school in Antalya.

It is a weird situation, actually, I mean that there are so few language schools. Does TOMER really have the monopol?

Just a suggestion, but as you commented that you don´t really want more grammer info (which i guess most language courses would  focus on and instead want to practice the day to day language)  why don´t you try looking for turks that could spend some days with you just hanging out chatting etc etc,  could be like exchange turkish one day english the next so they get something from it too.

Yes, thanks, I guess that will be our option in the end. I just wanted to organize something proper (in a methodical sense of teaching and learning) in advance, so that we don´t end up just being on holiday

You could try contacting the University so they could inform students what you might be looking for and see if someone would help. I used to meet with students in Antalya from the Akdeniz uni for prcatice my housemate worked their so arranged it for me but im sure many students would be happy to help.

I hope it´s not to late. www.turkishlanguagecenter.com
It´s small and friendly school based in Karsiyaka. As far as i  know they can organize an extra course focus on free speaking and developing discussing skills. Check out former students reports.

Just FYI, I took a couple of classes at TÖMER in Istanbul and really liked it. Back then it was focusing mostly on grammar, which was what I needed, so it worked for me. But I was in the beginner levels (Temel Türkçe), which only comprised 4 out of something like 12 courses. It seemed like we learned almost all of the grammar within those 4 levels, so I think that if you went on to the next tiers (Orta Türkçe and Yüksek Türkçe) it would have to focus more on conversation, readings, etc., cause there is almost no grammar left to teach.

hello Krema

May I know what you did do? Did you follow any lessons at Tômer, because I still don´t know what to do. I followed the first two years turkish, based on Tômer, so a lot of grammar, but in the end, I can´t speak a word, I only understand it when I read it, so I like to say more than ordening some food, and the greetings and buy something on the local markets.  Thanks a lot

I´m currently learning with the Babel school in Antalya in the heart of the old city. The instructor Mehtap is really excellent, she gives group and private lessons and is reasonably flexible about times. Would really recommend Babel.
