Iconic Turkish singer Tatlıses shot, fighting for life
Monday, March 14, 2011
ISTANBUL - Daily News with wires
Internationally known Turkish singer İbrahim Tatlıses was clinging to life late Monday after being shot in the head in Istanbul’s Şişli’s district, an attack that occurred shortly after midnight Sunday.
Tatlıses was leaving the Beyaz TV Channel studio building in Maslak Nurol Plaza, where he was filming a program, when unknown assailants in a black car opened fire with long-barreled weapons before fleeing the scene.
The singer was shot in the head and his assistant Buket Çakıcı, who was accompanying him, was hit in the shoulder. Tatlıses’ bodyguards brought the injured singer and his assistant to the Private Levent Hospital in the singer’s car.
Following the administration of first aid, Tatlıses and Çakıcı were transferred to Maslak Acıbadem Hospital, where the singer underwent surgery for around 45 minutes before he was taken to an intensive-care unit. Doctors said his health condition was still critical and he underwent a second surgery around 3 a.m.
“The singer remains in critical condition. We have been able to reduce the swelling in his brain to an acceptable level. We have induced a coma, but we plan to wake him toward the morning. Another [scan] will be done tomorrow morning. We will make the final decision to awaken him depending on its outcome,” said İlhan Elmacı, a neurosurgeon.
The doctor said there was a risk of permanent damage, but the main aim was to eradicate the vital risk, adding that surgery has been done to prevent permanent damage that could develop over time. “When he arrived at the hospital, the left side of his body was paralyzed and many consequent operations were done. Right now, no surgery is required. We will see his final condition with the [scan],” Elmacı said.
Asked whether Tatlıses was shot with one bullet, the doctor said the Forensic Medicine Institute would determine that answer. According to Elmacı, serious damage had occurred in the singer’s brain. “At the point of impact in his skull, there were many cracks. There was bleeding between the cerebral cortex and the brain, yet there wasn’t bleeding inside of his brain,” he said. “Right now, the bleeding has stopped. We have a very experienced team reducing the brain pressure. The process of sleeping is handled under our control.”
The area of the brain where the singer was hit does not involve speech functions, said the doctor, saying that Tatlıses would not have difficulty retaining his famous voice. “He might have some loss of power, but I don’t think that he will have a physical problem,” he said. “Our first priority is to get him upgraded from critical condition. Afterwards, we will make a plan of how we can fix the body’s functions; that will take a year.”
Tatlıses’ family and fans are anxiously waiting in the hospital, the doctor said, adding that nobody but medical personnel can enter the intensive care unit. “Rumors saying that people are entering the intensive health unit are a lie. He is under our control in the intensive health unit,” Elmacı said.
The armed attack on the singer involved at least two people, said Public Security Branch Office teams that are investigating security cameras and MOBESE cameras around the buildings. According to information obtained so far, four bullets hit Tatlıses’ car. Four bullet traces were found around the buildings and 11 empty cases were recovered from the scene of the attack.

"His life as a singer has come to the end. He won´t be able to sing again even if he recover from the damage in his brain." said his brother yesterday.
TV showed him singing on stage one day before the attack. He has an incredible voice. What a pity.

How tragic! I am speechless, how could someone do such mean act. I love his singing and have a few of his CDs. I hope he is not suffering too much and his family and those who love him will be strong and brave.
Condolences to his family.

Dozens of people rushing to an Istanbul hospital Monday morning to await information on a man suffering from gunshot wounds suggested that the victim was no ordinary patient. Indeed, the manifest worry for the condition of İbrahim Tatlıses, one of Turkey’s best-known singers, confirmed that the “emperor’s” popularity is not just due to his voice, according to experts.
Tatlıses wrote his own rags-to-riches story in the mid-1970s, Pekşen said. Tatlıses was a young construction worker in his hometown, the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, that was legendarily overheard singing to himself one day; he was quickly encouraged to realize his musical potential in the big cities. He released his debut record, “Ayağında Kundura,” when he was just 23, and rose to superstardom almost overnight.
“Frankly, İbrahim Tatlıses’ vocal technique and power of his voice is far ahead of Orhan Gencebay’s, along with many others. He has an amazing voice and has sung perfectly, whatever he sung,” Dilmener said. “But still, he is not as accepted as the others. It is not due to his artistic capacities, but his rude attitude.”
Claims that he verbally and physically abused his former lovers, Derya Tuna or belly dancer Asena, were published in the Turkish tabloid media on almost a daily basis. Last year, it was also reported that he called an 8-year-old listener a “little bitch” while he was on stage.
“That kind of sexism could have been ignored in the 1970s or 1980s, but nobody tolerates it now,” Dilmener said. “It makes it easier for us to scorn him, instead of loving him.”
However, Tatlıses’ shooting is likely to create a warmer atmosphere.
Cüneyt Özdemir made a reference to Charles De Gaulle’s famous “Sartre is France” statement on defending the famous philosopher and wrote “Tatlıses is Turkey” in daily Radikal. Ertuğrul Özkök of daily Hürriyet wrote that he could be one of the key figures in promoting Turkey’s unity.
“From İzmir to Ankara, Edirne to Kars, Şanlıurfa to Tekirdağ, a nation is praying for you, İbo,” Özkök wrote in his column earlier this week. “He has the heart to make both a Turk and a Kurd laugh or cry. He has the roughness to make a Turk and a Kurd angry, as well.”

İbo is a Kurd ethnically but he is the most famous Turkish singer in Turkic republics where, when they speak of Turkish music, he is the first name mentioned.

I never liked his music and was quite surprised why so many women love him when I saw him. Still, it´s always a tragedy when a human being´s life is in danger.
Armegon - are you saying it might have been a mafia assassination?

Turkish police are investigatiing a possible connection with the attack and PKK. Prior to the attack,he was about to apply for becoming a candiate in AKP´s list for the upcoming elections in June this year.
PKK may have seen it unacceptable as he surely would draw many Kurdish votes to AKP.

As a matter of fact, 4 people in connection with PKK have been jailed.
BDP (the extension of the terrorist PKK organisation) leader has denied the charges as expected. But police have the evidence proving it. See below.
İbrahim Tatlıses’e düzenlenen silahlı saldırı ile bağlantıları olduğu gerekçesiyle tutuklanan 4 PKK’lının evlerinde yapılan aramada polisin bazı kroki ve haritalara ulaşmıştığı iddia edilmişti.Tutuklanan PKK’lı tetikçi N.Ş.´nin evinde bulunan bilgisayardan ise Tatlıses’in Maslak Acıbadem Hastanesi’ndeki odasını tarif eden krokiler ve kendisinin kırsalda çekilmiş bazı fotoğraflarının çıktığı öne sürüldü. Örgütün hastanede keşif yapıp, Google’dan indirdiği hastane krokisinin altına da Tatlıses’le ilgili bilgiler not ettiği anlaşıldı.
Vatan Gazetesi´nden Savaş Akın´ın haberine göre işte ele geçen o notta şu ifadeler yer alıyor:
Emir BDP’li avukattan geldi
2’nci tetikçi N.Ş.´nin bilgisayarında ise önceki gün tutuklanan BDP parti meclis üyesi Avukat R.M.´nin gönderdiği bir mail bulundu. Mailde Avukat R.M.´nin N.Ş.´ye ‘Yarım kalan işi tamamlayın. O halkına ihanet etti’ diye emir verdiği de anlaşıldı.
“Maslak Acıbadem Hastanesi yoğun bakım bölümünde yatıyor”, “Yoğun bakım ünitesi hastanenin ana girişine göre zemin katta, yan girişten girildiğinde bir alt kattan giriliyor”, Hastane girişinde polis bulunuyor yoğun bakımın kapısında polis beklemiyor, hastane önünde ziyarete gelenlerin yoğunluğu var.”
Translation:
During the search of the house of one of those jailed in connection with PKK, police have found plans of the hospital and Tatlıses´ room and a mail message saying "complete the unfinished job (i.e. kill him), he is a traitor." sent by BDP lawyer R.M.

Most Americans say "No, I don´t believe it. He can´t be dead" so I don´t think so!
