 ANNABEL  LEE

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

                           Edgar Allan Poe

                    [ 1809-1849]

ANNABEL LEE

Senelerce, senelerce evveldi;
Bir deniz ülkesinde
Yaşayan bir kız vardı, bileceksiniz
İsmi Annabel Lee;
Hiçbir şey düşünmezdi sevilmekten
Sevmekten başka beni.

O çocuk ben çocuk, memleketimiz
O deniz ülkesiydi,
Sevdalı değil karasevdalıydık
Ben ve Annabel Lee;
Göklerde uçan melekler bile
Kıskanırlardı bizi.

Bir gün işte bu yüzden göze geldi
O deniz ülkesinde,
Üşüdü rüzgârından bir bulutun
Güzelim Annabel Lee;
Götürdüler el üstünde
Koyup gittiler beni,
Mezarı ordadır şimdi,
O deniz ülkesinde.

Biz daha bahtiyardık meleklerden
Onlar kıskandı bizi,
-Evet- bu yüzden? (şahidimdir herkes
Ve o deniz ülkesi)
Bir gece bulutunun rüzgârından
Üşüdü gitti Annabel Lee

Sevdadan yana, kim olursa olsun,
Yaşça başça ileri,
Geçemezlerdi bizi;
Ne yedi kat göklerdeki melekler,
Ne deniz dibi cinleri,
Hiçbiri ayıramaz beni senden
Güzelim Annabel Lee.

Ay gelip ışır, hayalin irişir
Güzelim Annabel Lee;
Bu yıldızlar gözlerin gibi parlar
Güzelim Annabel Lee;
Orda gecelerim, uzanır beklerim
Sevgilim, sevgilim, hayatım, gelinim
O azgın sahildeki,
Yattığın yerde seni.

           THE EYES

Rest Master, for we be a-weary, weary
And would feel the fingers of the wind
Upon these lids that lie over us
Sodden and lead-heavy.

Rest brother, for lo ! the dawn is without !
The yellow flame paleth
And the wax runs low.

Free us, for without be goodly colours,
Green of the wood-moss and flower colours,
And coolness beneath the trees.

Free us, for we perish
In this ever-flowing monotony
Of ugly print marks, black
Upon white parchment.

Free us, for there is one
Whose smile more availeth
Than all the age-old knowledge of thy books:
And we would look thereon.

                            EZRA  POUND

Note : One of my favorite poem. [ En sevdiğim şiirlerden biri ]

                     GÖZLER

Efendimiz dinlen artık, yorgunuz yorgun,
Duyalım biraz da rüzgârların parmaklarını
Üstümüzü örten şu durgun
Yaş kurşun gibi ağır kapaklarda.

Dinlen artık kardeş, gün ağarıyor bak dışarda!
Soldukça soluyor sarı ışık
Eridikçe eriyor mum.

Salıver bizi, dışarda en tatlı renkler,
Yosunun yeşili, çiçek renkleri,
Ağacın altı serinlik.

Salıver bizi, tükeniyoruz yoksa
Akıp duran tekdüzeliğinde
Kuru kuru baskıların
Ak kâğıt üzerinde.

Salıver bizi, biri var ki
Bir gülüşünün verdiğini vermez sana
Yıllanmış bilgisini tüm okuduklarının
Ona bakalım ona

         SADDEST POEM

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.

Write, for instance: "The night is full of stars,
and the stars, blue, shiver in the distance."

The night wind whirls in the sky and sings.

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

On nights like this, I held her in my arms.
I kissed her so many times under the infinite sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her.
How could I not have loved her large, still eyes?

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.
To think I don´t have her. To feel that I´ve lost her.

To hear the immense night, more immense without her.
And the poem falls to the soul as dew to grass.

What does it matter that my love couldn´t keep her.
The night is full of stars and she is not with me.

That´s all. Far away, someone sings. Far away.
My soul is lost without her.

As if to bring her near, my eyes search for her.
My heart searches for her and she is not with me.

The same night that whitens the same trees.
We, we who were, we are the same no longer.

I no longer love her, true, but how much I loved her.
My voice searched the wind to touch her ear.

Someone else´s. She will be someone else´s. As she once
belonged to my kisses.
Her voice, her light body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, true, but perhaps I love her.
Love is so short and oblivion so long.

Because on nights like this I held her in my arms,
my soul is lost without her.

Although this may be the last pain she causes me,
and this may be the last poem I write for her.

Ellere yar olur. öpmemden önceki gibi.
O ses, ışıl ışıl ten ve sonsuz bakışlarla
Artık sevmiyorum ya severim belki yine
Ne uzundur unutuş ah ne kısadır sevda
Böyle gecelerde kollarıma aldım çünkü
Yüreğim dayanmıyor yitmesine kolayca

Belki bana verdiği son acıdır bu acı
Belki son şiirdir bu yazdığım şiir ona

  ALONE

Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don´t believe I´m wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can´t use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They´ve got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I´ll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
´Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    YALNIZ

Uzanarak dün gece
Düşünerek
Suyun susamadığı
Ve ekmeğin taş olmadığı yerde
Ruhuma nasıl bir ev bulacağımı
Bir kanıya vardım en sonunda
Ve sanmıyorum ki bu konuda yanıldım
Ki hiç kimse
Fakat hiçbir kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz.

Yalnız, yapyalnız
Hiç kimse, fakat hiçbir kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz.

Bazı milyonerler vardır
Harcayamayacakları parayla
Dolanır karıları ölüm hayaletleri gibi
Blues şarkıları söyler çocukları
Pahalı doktorları vardır
Taştan yüreklerini sağaltsınlar diye.
Fakat hiç kimse
Hayır, hiç kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz.

Yalnız, yapyalnız
Hiç kimse, fakat hiçbir kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz.

Şimdi dinlersen can kulağıyla
Söyleyeceğim sana bildiğimi
Toplanmaktadır fırtına bulutları
Esmektedir şimdi yel
İnsanlık acı çekmektedir
Ve işitirim şikayeti,
Değil mi ki hiç kimse,
Fakat hiç kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz.

Yalnız, yapyalnız
Hiç kimse, fakat hiçbir kimse
Burada yalnız başına yapamaz

I love you

I love you

like dipping bread into salt and eating
Like waking up at night with high fever
and drinking water, with the tap in my mouth
Like unwrapping the heavy box from the postman
with no clue what it is
fluttering, happy, doubtful
I love you
like flying over the sea in a plane for the first time
Like something moves inside me
when it gets dark softly in Istanbul
I love you
Like thanking God that we live.

SEVİYORUM  SENİ

Seviyorum seni ekmeği tuza banıp yer gibi
Geceleyin ateşler içinde uyanarak
Ağzımı dayayıp musluğa su içer gibi,
Ağır posta paketini, neyin nesi belirsiz,
Telaşlı, sevinçli, kuşkulu açar gibi.
Seviyorum seni denizi ilk defa uçakla geçer gibi.
İstanbul’da yumuşacık kararırken ortalık
İçimde kımıldanan birşeyler gibi
Seviyorum seni ‘yaşıyoruz çok şükür’ der gibi

RAKI

Bu meret öyle bir merettir ki,
acıyla içilir, tatlıyla içilir,
neşeyle içilir, ağlayarak içilir,
kavunla içilir, peynirle içilir,
ikisi birlikte çok güzel içilir,
yemekle içilir, mezeyle içilir,
suyla içilir, susuz içilir
sodayla içilir, şalgamla içilir.
Ama işte,
Bir tek  salakla  içilmez
.

My attempt:

This "meret" (evil thing) is such a kind of "meret" that

it can be drunk with bitter or sweet

drunk with joy or cry

drunk with melon or cheese,

nicely and easily with those

drunk with the meal or appetizer

drunk with or without water

drunk with soda or "şalgam" juice

but

cannot be drunk with the fools around.

ANNEME MEKTUP
Sağ mısın henüz ihtiyarcığım?
Ben de sağım. Selam, selam!
Döksün çatısından yuvacığının
O betimsiz aydınlığını akşam.

Duyuyorum özenip tasanı gizlemeye,
Kederleniyormuşsun benim güç yazgıma,
Sık sık çıkıyormuşsun yolumu gözlemeye
Bürünüp eski moda harap urbana.

Ve akşamın mavi karanlığında sana
Sık sık görünüyormuş bir acıklı düş:
Meyhane kavgasında birisi güya
Fin işi bıçağını yüreğime gömmüş.

Değil anacığım! Dinsin gözünde yaş.
Başka şey değil bu, acı bir karabasan.
Olmadım daha öyle sefil bir ayyaş,
Hiç ölür müyüm sana kavuşmadan.

Eskisi gibiyim yine, öyle sevecen ve sıcak
Ve yalnızca bir düşte yanıyor yüreğim,
İçimde başkaldıran özlemle çabucak
Alçacık evimize döneceğim.

Döneceğim, baharın ak bahçemizde
Salınınca dallar dört bir yandan.
Ancak sen uyandırma beni sekiz yıl önce
Uykumu böldüğün gibi gün ağarmadan.

Uyandırma o düşler içinde gideni,
Dalgalandırma o gerçekleşmeyeni,
Çok erken bir bitkinliği ve yitimi
Çekmek beklermiş yaşamda beni.

Dua etmeyi de öğretme bana. Eksik olsun!
Eskiye dönüş hiç yok artık.
Sensin tek dayanağım ve avuntum,
Tek sensin bana betimsiz aydınlık.

Unut, son ver artık tasanı gizlemeye,
Kederlenme benim güç yazgıma.
Öyle sık çıkma yolumu gözlemeye,
Bürünüp eski moda harap urbana.

A LETTER TO MOTHER

Are you still alive, my dear granny?
I am alive as well. Hello! Hello!
May there always be above you, honey,
The amazing stream of evening glow.

I"ve been told that hiding your disquiet,
Worrying  about me a lot,
You go out  to the roadside every night,
Wearing your shabby overcoat.

In the evening  darkness, very often,
You conceive the same old scene of blood:
Kind of in a tavern fight  some ruffian
Plunged a Finnish knife into my heart.

Now calm down, mom! And don"t be dreary!
It"s a painful fiction through and through.
I"m not so bad a drunkard, really,
As to die without seeing you.

I"m your tender son  as ever, dear,
And the only thing I dream of now
Is to leave this dismal boredom here
And return to our little house. And how!

I"ll return in spring without warning
When the garden blossoms, white as snow.
Please don"t wake me early in the morning,
As you did before, eight years ago.

Don"t disturb my dreams that now have flown,
Don"t  perturb my vain and futile strife
For it"s much too early that I"ve known
Heavy loss and weariness in life.

Please don"t teach me how to say my prayers!
There is no way back to what is gone.
You"re my only joy, support and praise
And my only flare shining on.

Please  forget about your pain and fear,
and don"t  worry  over me a lot
Don"t go out  to the roadside, dear,
Wearing your shabby overcoat.
