I am going to be living in Turkey for a couple of months. I need to get health insurance. Should I get health insurance from my own country before I travel or can I get health insurance when I get there in Turkey. Also anyone have any advice on whats the best plan to get as I haven´t a clue!

Can anyone tell me if the contraceptive pill is available over the counter in Turkey or do you need a prescription?

 I think best option for you, to get an insurance before come to here. If something goes wrong with you, your insurance company will give you a direction. Of course its up to you.

I spent 2 months there last year and thank God I had travel insurance. I took out a 12 month travel policy with insure and go that gave me up to 90 days anyone trip.

Last October I had a ruptured appendix and got rushed into Bodrum Universal Hospital where they scanned me etc. and did an emergency operation.  I was in hospital for 3 weeks and my travel insurance paid for everything and dealt with the hospital direct.

DO NOT TRAVEL THERE WITHOUT IT.

Oh yeah I will definitely get some insurance. Do you think travel insurance covers you enough though? I find it is cheaper than health insurance but I am not sure if there is a big difference in what medical treatments you can avail of.

Carry your own contraceptive pills, safely tucked away in both pockets, just in case.

Turkish pills may be tricky; while in Turkey, you will never know when the need can arise.

It depends on how many months "a couple of months" is, and also if you are officially going to migrate from the country you are currently living in. You can get birthcontrol over the counter. Yes, we all know we need to use this in combination with a condom, but women don´t just use the pill to prevent pregnancy! Keep in mind that there is a possibility that your particular brand might not be available in Turkey, and you might have to switch to a different one (which can cause some issues). So, how long are you going for?

@ christine, I do not take the pill for contraceptive reasons I take it for medical reason and I am aware that it does not prevent stds!

Hi barba I will be going for 9 months, I actually managed to sort out getting enough for 6 months to take with me before I go so less to worry about now. However, when I get over there I might just go to a chemist and show them the label as they will probably understand the medical terms I guess. 

And glad you aren´t judging about me using the pill I am surprised others here don´t realise people use the pill for things like severe period pains and acne not just as a contraceptive.

If you are getting health insurance from your own country, keep in mind to check what is covered. Sometimes foreign stays are only covered on a limited basis. When you get health insurance in Turkey, you will need a Turkish social security number. If you are getting a legal job in Turkey where your employer pays taxes and social security, you will also have a state health insurance. The downside of this insurence is that it will only cover you after at least a month of work and it does not cover foreign trips (for example a day trip to Greece).

The chemist will understand the ingredients of your pill. You might get a different version. For example, instead of Diana you might get cyproteron / ethinylestradiol. This is basically the same as Diana, although some "helper" ingredients differ. This should not change your reaction to the pill, although some users say it does.
