The PM keeps talking with his real intentions now. This time he said "Male and females students can NOT stay in the same dormitory in the same house. This is against our conservative democracy. We gave the orders and they will do whatever is necessary"

Well,  PM should stop being obsessed with the sex of others!! It is better if he concantrates with his own.

You don´t understand. It may be a precondition for the daughter´s education in conservative families that the girl can study without the fear of being involved with men. So this decision may actually improve girls´ possibilities for higher education just like allowing headscarves in the university.

Some scholars say hijab and all that belongs to it actually opens the society for the female sex because a woman with a headscarf is not treated as a representative of her gender but a neutral actor.

Sometimes you have to take a step  -  if not backwards  -  at least to the side in order to acchieve progress.

A lady friend of mine whose daughter has married into a very religious family (thus had to cover her head) tells me that her little grandson was very surprised to see her with finger polish on her nails, because he had figured my friend to be a man since she wore no headscarves.

What a confusion for young minds, no?

in my opinion, male and female students shouldn´t stay in the same state dormitory. But they should be free to stay in any private dormitory or home. I dont like it but i dont interfere their life, too.

I think our PM shouls stop thinking about women and virtue of women.

It might be difficult but someone has to tell him the sheer reality: "None of his business", "none of state´s business"

Well, nobody is forcing the conservative families to put their girls into a situation in which they need to deal with men. They may prefer their daughters to be staying out of men´s eyes.. But what about others? the others who think letting girls and boys educating together or staying in the same dormitories wont harm their children? What if they think it is much better way to prepare them for the future?

But what about others?

Think about the weak one: the girl who may be deprived from higher education because of this. The others will find their ways. And this girl, after getting her chance, will later make a big difference in her environment.

(I don´t know if this is what the PM ment, hardly, probably as a populist he just wanted to flatter his supporters. I just wanted to remind that usually the best way is to let people follow their principles and beliefs AND encourage them to take part in the society.)

“It’s not clear what is going on in these places. They are all mixed up, anything can happen. As a conservative democratic government, we have to intervene. In these places, there is intelligence received by our security forces, the police department and the governorates. Acting upon this intelligence, our governors are intervening in these situations. Why are you annoyed about this?”
he added, citing complaints from neighbors living in the same apartment buildings as students.

Erdoğan portrayed such actions as part of the government´s responsibility, stressing that this had nothing to do with “intervening in people’s lifestyles.”

Ok, so I have a son who is getting ready to go to college in the next 2 years so we have started looking at different Universities.  I am not particularly conservative or liberal...I tend to be more moderate BUT I will be paying big money for my son to go to school, so I want him to STUDY and not be very distracted.  So, I will help him choose a University where I believe this will happen.  It is MY BUSINESS to do this...not my governments.

So my questions are, why do people willingly give up these decisions to a government?  AND Why are we only concerned with females in college? Basically, the Turkish government is saying that young Turkish boys are horney animals when they go to University so they can´t be trusted with your daughters...and vice versa, your girls can´t possibly control themselves so you must keep them away from boys.  Work must be done to change these stereotypes...not encourage them.  Abla made a great point that changing this rule my encourage more parents to educate their daughters but on the other side of it, it doesn´t do a thing break down the barriers between men and women.

In fact, in most dormitories girls and guys stay seperate. What prime minister wants to do is to prevent guys and girls from staying in the same house. He is not trying to allow girls to stay at different dormitories or houses, he is trying to force them to do that.

my thoughts about this issue : there are those that do and those that don´t , parents/ authories will never be able to control this or stop it from happening. Young adults will have sex when they are ready and want it.

People get raped in prisons and there is no one to stop it yet it is considered a controlled enviroment. Look at your own history and decisions and realize that you made a choice also........

Rezil olduk elaleme...

man out of thousands of problems in this country i fail to see the focus on the students and their genitals. sure its a good thing and fits in with out cultural sociological whatever, but there are so many social problems that need to be solved (education marching on the front) i just cant believe into the sincerty of this kind of approach. why the micromamangement?

so its about morals? there are so many things that need to be fixed in this country like safety, traffic, education, starvation, human trade etc. so when the president just puts the sex life of students on focus, i understand a kind of message from this that says like everything else is either fixed or the reason that the things that arent fixed is because students are staying in the same place as males and females. and as if when this is taken care of the country will be free from any problems. imagine that theres a bomb that detonated and people are wounded etc and then you come there and complain about the trash on the street. this looks like this.

10 years ago adultry was unlawful and would be punished. But it is not a crime anymore. This govermnment fixed the related law for it.

So now some neighbours call police and complain they are having sex. And the police say them there is nothing to be done about it. There is no law for punishing such acts.

I was just about to suggest that members can grab an "apart" for the class reunion. Perhaps, I should reconsider.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Sadık Yakut said on Wednesday that Turkey made a mistake in allowing coeducation and promised that efforts to correct that mistake would come soon.

Delivering a speech at the Turkish Parliament´s 14th International Forum on Children, Yakut said, “Turkey made a historic mistake in allowing the education of male and female students at the same schools in moves toward Westernization.”

He added that there are Western schools in Turkey where coeducation is not allowed.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan set off an international controversy in early November when he spoke out -- and threatened government action -- against male and female students living together.

once i read somewhere, in a western country, randomly all students in a class were girls. the next year they were mixed with boy students. the same teacher were still teaching them and observed the difference. the teacher said that girls success in education became weaker, their behaviour changed, raising their finger to answer questions or ask more questions became less then previous year. and they became more silent.

anyway, i dont say that boys and girls should be seperated but there is no research about success of mixed gender education. at least there must be an alternate option. if i were i girl, i would prefer going to a high scholl all girl students inside. there is no option for this.

from my experiences: two of my teachers thought mixed gender education is not enough. we should make them more mixed. in my class, there were double chairs, i mean always two students sit side by side. our female english teacher said from now on everybody in the class have to stay one boy one girl. after that many problems began. girls begged their teacher, we dont wanna sit with such and such person. the teacher insisted and forced them to stay. next week some girls had big problems with some boys and started to cry, they said they cant bear it anymore. after all we returned back to our naturel sitting position and everything got normal.
