Couldn´t sleep or haven´t been able to sleep? In this case it´s couldn´t sleep. Interesting, it seems Turkish doesn´t distinguish between couldn´t and haven´t been able to, -amadım can be used for either. Couldn´t refers to a point in time in the past, haven´t been able to refers to a range in time, from the past up to and including the present.

Sorry I was wrong. I mean: I wasn´t able to sleep.

I know "could" as; the actions that you do always in the past.

wasn´t able to verb: tha actions that you cannot do in a time.

Am I wrong now?

It´s good. ´Could/couldn´t´ and ´was/wasn´t able to´ are usually the same.

And I can separate according to the functions "amadım" if you want.

yapmak=to make/to do

yap=do

yap-a-ma-dım= I couldn´t do

a = can/could

ma = not

dı= preterite

m= I/me

If you make it positive:

yapabildim

ebil= can/could

di= preterite

m=I

a = is used when you want to make the sentence positive.

ebil(mek) = is used when you want to make the sentence negative.

Yapamam = I can´t do

Yap-a-ma-m

Yapabilirim = I can do

Yap-abil-ir-im

ir= present simple tense

other subjects

Ben yap-abil-ir-im

Sen yap-abil-ir-sin

O    yap-abil-ir

Biz  yap-abil-ir-iz

Siz  yap-abil-ir-siniz

Onlar yap-abil-ir-ler
