The book 'ince memed' by Yaşar Kemal shows how arranged marriages can affect the life of entire villages.

ince Mehmet fell in love with a girl, Hatché (this is her name in the dutch translation :-S I find it a rather weird name translated like this!), but she was already 'promised' to the cousin of Abdi Aga (the 'boss' of 5 villages). The aga abused a lot of his villagers and wasn't loved. However, Hatchés family couldn't refuse the marriage proposal and they agreed. Hatché and Ince Mehmet decided to run away, but they got caught. Mehmet killed the fiancee of Hatché and shot Abdi Aga too. As Mehmet escaped and became a bandit in the woods, Hatché was brought to prison. I haven't finished the book yet, so more than this I don't know.. but many villagers suffered only because they didn't let those two young lovers marry!!

So this is a useless contest

Deli kizin, comments were directed to Yusuf, but not exactly to him as a person, as I'm sure everybody can guess that the poor man didn't really mean to imply anything so derogatory.

Well yeah, someone is sexy not only because of the size of her breasts (although that's kinda necessary) but also by her intelligence (although that depends on the intelligence of the guy).

Again, the word 'beauty' is not equivalent with 'sexy' which is what such contests are all about in the real world.

Well I never watch such contests, nor do I watch programmes like America's Next Top Model, because I agree with you They are usually about being sexy.. and I think my idea about sexy comes closer to the definition of beauty.

Anyway, this discussion enrolled because of Yusuf's idea, so if we knew he never meant such a thing, I wonder why we're discussing it in the first place.

Deli kizin, I don't think the comments are about Yusuf or maybe even this contest in particular, but about such things in general. It's about the roots and consequenses of sexism in the real world; judging women by their beauty is like judging men by their muscles or aggressiveness.
Why don't we just name things straight and make "the sexiest female and male" contest?

Well I guess Yusuf made his point by saying it was nót only on beauty, but also for intelligence or kindness..

And I think the comments were against Yusuf, as he's even been named to be unenlightened. But I find him to be one of the kindest souls at this website, not to forget MrX (i keep forgetting that one )

I do realize the consequences of such behavior in general, but I think I'm not so feministic after all.

I didn't see the contest as sexistic or anything in any way, for the reason that Yusuf was the one who came up with the idea in the first place! Knowing him slightly gave me the feeling he had not such intentions what so ever.

I don't understand the fuss about it. It's not like the 'miss turkishclass' will get something to make the others jealous and it's not like you should be ashamed if you're not voted for???

Well in 3 months you won't learn much more than the basic Turkish I have It's really hard to learn a lot in 3 months, but you'll get the basic and I always think that once you at least made a start, it will stay in the back of your mind till you have time and opportunity to work further on it

I had around 9 months of Spanish class, but I really just fooled around and I don't speak a word now. The teacher I had made it easy to cheat, i even used to swap tests with a friend: she would study vocabulary and I would study grammar. So i made the grammar parts of my test and she would make the vocabulary parts of her test and then we would swap and i would make the grammar parts on her paper and she'd make the vocab ones on mine!!!
So I really didn't learn anything except grammar rules, but i dont know the words to apply them to
However, I did keep the material and I will study in free time once I enter turkish uni and speak it fluently.
