I liked gök´s translation, but to make it flow better in English we probably would need to change the structure and be more free:

he who loves with his brain, is seeking his own self-interest

he who loves with his heart, seeks no self-interest

he who loves with his mind, has ulterior motives

he who loves with his heart, has no ulterior motive.

Thread: A White Christmas?

It looks like if you want a white Christmas you need to come to Turkey!

Weather stations are predicting 6-10 degree drop in temperature this weekend, with snow on Christmas Eve in all places except Western Marmara and the Aegean Coast.

24 Aralık Cumartesi günü Marmara’nın batısı ile Kıyı Ege dışında kalan tüm yurt yağışlı geçecek. Yağışlar kıyılarda yağmur diğer yerlerde kar şeklinde olacak.

25 Aralık Pazar günü yağışlı hava Karadeniz, İç Anadolu’nun doğusu, Doğu Akdeniz, Doğu ve Güneydoğu Anadolu bölgelerinde etkili olmaya devam edecek.

Yağışlar Güneydoğu Anadolu ile Doğu Akdeniz kıyıları ve Karadeniz kıyılarında yağmur, diğer kesimlerde kar şeklinde olacak.

I have heard that Turks can become members of their equivalent of The National Trust, whereby they can pay an annual subscription of apprx 30TL, giving them admission to all NT sites. Is there anything like this available to non-residents.

If anyone has any info, I would be grateful.

You are referring to a MüzeKart. This is not like the National Trust (which is a non-governmental body in the UK) but a governmental museum scheme. With it you can enter museums such as the Aya Sofya, Istanbul Archeological Museum, Ephesus etc. Private museums such as Sabancı Müzesi, Pera Müzesi etc are not part of the scheme.

It is supposed to be only for Turks. Tourists definitely cannot apply. But the treatment of foreigners resident in Turkey (with tax number, foreigners ID number, and ikametgah) changes depending on the site. Some of my friends have got a card, some have been refused. At the big Istanbul sites they tend not to issue cards to foreigners. But smaller places sometimes do.

Quoting Abla

If

takes a complete sentence as its object is the inlayed predicate going to be an infinitive or a participle? It sounds to me like a deontic verb (which means infinitive, doesn´t it?) but I am not sure about all the occurances. I understand kabul etmek/edilmek can be used for expressing opinions, too, telling if something is acceptable or not and I wouldn´t say this is manipulative use.

Abla, I don´t understand the grammatical terms you use, but here are a few examples:

1. Accepting (or not accepting) a noun:

Yasa tasarısını kabul etti - He/She/It accepted (approved) the draft law

2. Accepting (or not accepting) a verb:

Bizimle çalışmayı kabul etti - He/She accepted (agreed) to work with us

Quoting insallah

an example of something you could say

My biggest congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby.
May your lives be filled with all the happiness and joy such a gift can bring.

Güzel bebeğinizin doğumu sebebiyle en büyük tebriklerimi iletiyorum.
Bütün hayatınız boyunca böylesine güzel bir hediyenin size mutluluk ve neşe getirmesini dilerim.

or

Oğlunuzun doğumunu tebrik ederim. Dünyaya hoş geldin Name. Sizin için çok mutluyum, çok güzel bir haber

Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. Welcome to the world NAME .I am so pleased for you its wonderful news

 These are lovely!

Another short form is "gözünüz aydın" - literally "light to your eyes" said when a good thing you have waited for for a long time (e.g. 9 months pregnancy!) happens.

Hep mesajlarimin bu kisminda aklima beni üzen birsey geliyor sabahlari senden ayrilmak zorunda kaldigim zamanlar beni hep üzdü.

I remember something in that part of my messages which make me sad. Its being hard to leave you in the mornings. It was sadness time for me.

Translation is fine, and the meaning is there, but we would probably say the last bit somewhat freer in English:

Its being hard to leave you in the mornings. It was sadness time for me.

The times when it was hard to leave you in the mornings were sad for me.

Its not one by one translate but its alternate

"I wish you would know, what is on my mind"

These expressions can´t be translated literally, anyway.

Alternatively, you could express the wistfulness of bir bilsen as

If only you knew what is on my mind.

But yours is good, too
