I saw this yesterday and found it interesting. Any thoughts about this?

Rivers to be privatized as a solution to water crisis
Wednesday, August 1, 2007

The government has found a new solution for the water crisis that emerged due to global warming, insufficient rain and the delayed construction of dams. The right to operate the rivers and lakes will be sold to private sector for a period of 49 years.

None of the men in my family ever wore wedding rings. It's a recent thing for men to wear wedding rings.

Please excuse this correction, but:
meat = refers to the flesh of an animal.
Meet = is to get together

Quoting KeithL:

I have had all my dental work for the past 5 or 6 years done in Beşiktaş. Prices seem to be about 20% of what I would normally pay in the US. And the quality of the work is excellent.

I have a couple of friends who have had extensive work done in Turkey for a fraction of what the cost would have been in the USA.

One had an implant, the other had veneers. Both were very happy with the work and the work seems to have been quite professional and reasonable.

Next time I go, it would be nice to locate a good dentist and get some work done myself. I think the issue it finding a reliable dentist.

Have you ever tried Paella? It's a Spanish dish, but I've served it to some Turks with good response. It is also pretty simple to make as all is done in one pot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paella

There are many variations. I use sucuk instead of Spanish sausage.

It's a rice dish:

Rice
saffron
capers
tomatoes
bell peppers
sausage of some sort
chicken pieces with the skin on
some type of fish, could be scallops or shrimp.

Another nice dish is gaspacho....of course don't put in the ham.

Well, that's just awful. How are these people going to get home? I wonder if something like that happens, what the legal answers would be. Should one always purchase flight insurance?

"Eye Candy" is another expression for anything that is pleasing to the eyes. It could be anything from a beautiful carpet to an attractive person.

In reading posts here I have not seen anyone telling foreigners to stay out of Turkey. However, it is not unreasonable to expect one's guests to be respectful of one's own home.

I have on the other hand seen you (and the other gang of 3) being insulting and abusive regarding Turkish and Islamic culture. Instead of engaging in a dialogue that would fruther understanding and tolerance, you seem to want things your way and do not seek to find the wisdom of any other way.

Your cultural Imperialism reeks in most all of your posts. You disrespect the ideals and values of others and heap insults on those that do not agree with you want.

Words are powerful. They can help create peace and happiness or reap disharmony and contempt. I would advise you to be more sensitive and thoughtful in your posts and perhaps wait a while and reread and rethink your posts.

It appears to me that if you love your culture so much, why are you going to Turkey and spending time on a Turkish forum? Or is it that you like the beaches and sun in Turkey and would prefer to just transplant your culture there and get rid of the actual Turkish culture. Anyway, that's what it looks like, and I might mention that Briton does have a long history in that area.

Alameda, you have made allegations about me in this personal attack (which by the way, for someone who loves to quote rules at me, is AGAINST forum rules). I am well aware that you didn't like me disagreeing with you on a number of occasions and presumably you decided this was a good opportunity to get some kind of personal revenge.

Dont even BEGIN to tell me about my country's history. I am not proud of some of my country's past, and have never pretended otherwise. I will not copy the trend of others on this forum by insulting your country just because you insult mine, but if I did - it would take me all night!!!

I would like you to justify your comment that I am abusive and disrespectful about Islam. The rest of your comments are based on your assumptions of my character, and therefore, while completely unfounded, I really dont care to justify to someone like YOU.

First of all, you have no idea of what my nationality is. My profile says I'm in the USA, it does not say anything regarding my ethnicity or sex. The USA is a multicultural multiethnic society where at this time there are a great amount of disagreements on the current path taken.

I did not say you insulted Islam, I said "Turkish and Islamic culture". There is a difference.

As for who I am and what I'm like, you have no idea.
This has nothing to do with personal revenge, it's about the desire to have a more civil discourse and stop the infantile insults and veiled innuendos.

It is obvious the Gang of Three has insulted quite a few here with off hand remarks regarding others cultures.

At this particular time in history we must tread very lightly. Do you not agree?

Quoting MarioninTurkey:

About Orhan Pamuk being the best known in the world: my (humble) personal opinion is a large part of his success is his translator Maureen Freely. That lady is great! Daughter of author and lecturer John Freely, of Bosphorus University, she was born and brought up in Turkey and understands Turkey, the language, and the foreigner's point of view well. She is also an author in her own right (see Enlightened, a new novel by her set in Istanbul).

He got a great translator, who has a really good style, and then got really famous abroad. The UK publisher is currently getting her to re-translate some of his earlier books.

This is an important message for other top authors such as Buket Uzuner, Ahmet Ümit etc, whose translations often are not great. Also for the Culture Ministry who sponsor translations to be done by university professors: the results are a style of English that English people find soooooo boring.

Hi Marion,

I've read all of his books with the exception of the Black Book, which I will read as soon as I finish The Passionate Nomad, the life of Freya Stark. I have to disagree with you regarding the translations of Ms.Freely. Although she is a wonderful translator, Guneli Gun translated New Life, which I found facinating, Erdag Goknar translated My Name is Red.....and his work still held up quite well.
