hello everybody,

I lived here long enough to tell you that in Mersin, even my mother in law when she was young could wear mini skirt....

n her mom never wore a veil...so..

i think women have problems of gender discrimination in Eastern parts of Turkey...

or in non educated families...

Anyway, it is also true that here women have to ask permission of their fathers, brothers or husbands sometimes to do different things, which are normal to do without even telling in European countries..

for example, give private lessons to a man...if u are a teacher...i can tell u that 99 percent of men will say a big NO

Merhaba Azade!
the connection between Turkish and Romanian is easy to see(for Romanians, i mean):
the Ottoman Empire fought many many centuries with Romanians, and not only ...in order to make this country a "pashalic" ..
so...some of the Turks remained here...especially in the Black Sea area and around 200 words used in daily speech entered both languages..

About the connection between Turkish and Asian languages...Turkish and Korean, Hungarian and Finnish, are all coming from the Altai Mountains (that happened lon long time ago)....so...these languages are a bit related

Hello, my husband is also Turkish, we married on 5th of February, this year and yes, i was very very surprised to hear words sounding so similar to Romanian, my language..hhee
Mary,
we also say:
bardaca-bardak
bre-bre
caisa-kayısı
musteriu-müşteri
pantalon-pantolon
reclama-reklam
sutien-sutyen
For maidan-meydan (we use it with a bit different sense)
(we took them, as some other words, from Turkish, cos we really have a big community in Constanta and in the area of Black Sea)
i am now learning Turkish...but it is a brainstorming in my head

Numai bine, Oana

Merhaba, Azade and Maria!
I am also Romanian..U were not out of topic at all...u explained very well the Latin /European issue...
Yes, many Romanians go there in a vacation...cos the country is not far from Ro and it is beautiful..!
But the finantial condtions are generally better in the Latin countries, comparing to some parts of Tk, except the big cities and the resort ones..
so I really don't think the others Europeans need to go to Turkey to "emprove" their lives by marring Turkmen...lol
Latins may get along with Turkish because we have some traits in commun: both temperamental, both loving parties (in Romanian, the word "bairam" comes from Turkish, cos we have a big Turk community at Constanta, at the Black Sea..)

I thought e is not pronounced i, in Turkish??
It is e, like in the past tense of to meet: met (I met her..)
so i think in English, the correct break-down of the words
Teşekkür ederim
is the 2nd one, from Loving Prague's examples

KERRIEOGDEN,
What I want you to know is that I am Romanian and my fiancee is Turk. His family is not very religious (so, please do not believe all the things you read here or see on tv
THEY ARE ALMOST LIKE US, THE REST OF EUROPEANS...AN OVERWHELMING PERCENT)
NOT ALL TURKS ARRANGE MARRIAGES, CMON, PEOPLE..WAKE UP AND DON'T SPEAK IF U DON'T KNOW THE REALITY FROM THERE..
I HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY FAMILY, REGARDING OUR MARRIAGE...NOT HIS!!
HIS PARENTS ARE HAPPY, AND THEY ARE VERY EAGER TO KNOW ME, IN 3 WEEKS...
BUT I FOUGHT WITH MY MOM, TO BE WITH HIM AND TO ACCEPT THE IDEA THAT HE IS SPEACIAL TO ME!!
HE EVEN WANTS TO BECOME ORTHODOX, COS HE KNOWS THAT HERE,
MY PEOPLE HAVE GREAT PREJUDICES REGARDING ISLAM...
SO, please, ask your lover to fight, like a man, because this has nothing to do with religion
and to decide if he wants you...
I don't want you to suffer...please, forgive me..
Just have a mature final talk with him and ask him to be honest
