Dutch news said just 20 minutes ago:

In all parts of the Turkish city Ankara there is no drinking-water available due to a crack in important waterworks. The expectation is that 4 million people will not have any water until at least tomorrow. The shortage is just at the same time that Turkey has one of the driest summers in history.Ankara suffers extra from this because the area it's in is a very dry one. The water stock in the capital was already limited in the past few weeks.

Ankara's mayor advises people to go on holiday to reduce the shortage.

Oh hell . I feel sorry for people in Ankara. It always makes me wonder why it is not a simple job to de-salinate sea water for domestic use? I dont know anything about this subject, but it seems that with sea levels rising, it is crazy that we all have water shortages...

Trudy you really hit the nail on our heads..
We live in Ankara. Thanks for reminding us the drought.

We desperately need water here. Don't you see?..We are about to get into a coma as a result of the drought. Couldn't you just send us a bottle of fresh water instead of echoing late from the UK?

Oh well, I better travel down to Antalya this weekend to quench my thirst with ice-cold cokes on the beach.

Ewww...I'm in California now and we have had quite a few water shortages, but not this bad. At least we have had drinking water....so far. It's very unpleasant indeed. We are told to store extra water for emergencies. Do you do that in Turkey? Of course, storing enough gets to be a problem. I've got quite a bit stored...but taking showers not be very much fun.

Good luck.

Well really they are not so different from English jokes . Unfortunately when you are writing its hard to get the tone of your text sometimes - which is why smilies come in so handy

As in all aspects of life - a smile or a wink goes a long way

well, people living in Ankara prefer not to drink the tap water. They rather get their drinking water from private companies which are specialized to commercialize spring water in 20L (~5.5 Gallons) plastic containers. It is cheap as well. It costs around 5 YTL (~ $3.5 USD) and it lasts about one week for a 4-member family. As far as water storage for taking showers, doing the dishes, etc. is concerned, people living in apartments are luckier than those living in their private houses such as in "Gecekondu"s, because larger buildings have their own water storage places that can store enough water for the apartment residents for 3-5 days during the water shortages.. Luckily we have not had any water shortages for more than 2 days so far. We get the water shortages every two days in different parts of Ankara and it lasts only two days untill we get the next water shortage.

Is the water that bad you can't boil it and drink it? Can you use a water filter to purify it? If you wash your veggies in the water and then eat a salad, it's not much different than drinking the tap water as it gets into your system. Taking showers, washing hair, brushing your teeth, you get the water in your system anyway through your pores. How do you deal with that?

I can't answer for Ankara - I will leave it to one of the 6 million citizens of the capital to speak for themselves.

But in Istanbul, drinking the water won't kill you .. you just get an awful taste from the chemicals they put in to kill the bugs, or from the rusty pipes the water has run down to come to you.

You can always tell from the taste if someone has made tea with tap water - a Turk would never do it, but sometimes a foreigner does. YUK!

If you want to drink water from the tap go to Izmit, there Thames Water (London's water company), runs the water supply and for me it's just like being back home

Maybe as a Turkish Class we should all do a rain dance tonight to try to bring water to Ankara. Let's synchronise watches....

His main point was that the bottled water is cheap, so why not drink good tasting water. I'm paying 7 YTL for 20 liter bottle. The water in the taps, its OK for brushing teeth, etc. But it is full of chlorine and particles, so for drinking, its just not as good. It doesnt leave a taste on the vegetables you clean, but I never use it to make cay or coffee.

Is there a 'rain dance' joke in Ankara HAVAsi (maybe not).

I drank the water at my fiance's house in Ankara with no problem, not on purpose, I just forgot and did it. It tasted a lot like water in Pueblo, Colorado,(not good)but it did not make me ill. I have never gotten ill from the water in Turkey brushing my teeth, ice, etc... and I have been all over Istanbul, Ankara, Central Anatolia down the western coast, along the southern coast. In Egypt I was ill the whole 2 weeks.

Until this event, I did not heard that Ankara's tap water is bad for drink. Whoever I know in Ankara drink tap water. Water shortage of Ankara work like this: One day water-one day reduction.

Many big buildings have their private depots. So, they don't feel the drought as much as the others. The worst thing is that it is very hot here...

As you know Tigris and Euphrates come from Turkey into Iraq, so water is common between Iraq and Turkey, consider the Euphrates river water is best for drinking, of course, after the liquidation sterilized
