Roswitha, you are welcome.
Because you are well-educated, cultured and intellectual lady, I know.

I will have a go...

Imperial Hotel

I have never seen anything like this before
You shot me, entered my blood, I protest
I was going to say a really warm "hello"
According to custom I was going to put my head on your knee
I was going to be thirsty for four days and four nights
The rain was going to put it out and then it was to burn again
sameland was to return from its travels
the clock on the wall was to stop
my heart, too, was going to stop of its own accord
I have never seen anything like this before
You shot me, entered my blood, I protest

In this autumn at the Imperial Hotel
these panes of glass are points of sadness, one by one
This is our pointlessness
a point where the line ends
This terrible wednesday
the pessimistic leaves commit suicide
a calendar of coughing and sneezing
I have never seen anything like this before
You shot me, entered my blood, I protest

The voices are lost in the mists of the harbour
the ships are tired and sleepy
it is half past five in the morning
you are in my arms
you are not like them, you are different
there is nothing in this world like your eyes
they enter a man's dreams
like a black ferry in his mind
on its travels knowing no pity

you were going to stand at the hotel's window
you were going to see the darkness of the city
you were going to see the rain in the darkness
your hair was going to get very wet
long, as long as a winter's night
without shedding even one tear
maria dolores was going to cry
istanbul was going to be overtaken by rain
I was going to look for work the whole day
I was going to bring you a song
our ears were going to burn

I took a photograph of the Imperial Hotel
Evening was dripping from its eaves
I told you to wait at its door
Your face looked like lilies
People were strolling in the Republican Garden
cumhuriyet bah├â┬žesi'nde insanlar geziyordu
The little Jews in Tepebaş
The Greek violinist at Asmalımescit
Our staying without wind
This is the pain we suffered
They were strolling along hand in hand
The newspapers wrote about a murder
A handful of blood shed on the Golden Horn

We stayed three nights at the Imperial Hotel
We didn't have the money for more
Your eyes never left my eyes
We were out on the streets the fourth night
The darkness didn't seem to end
We spent the night at Sirkeci Station
Those who knew us, and those who didn't, judged us
But we didn't ask their opinion
None of them looked us in the face
None of them took us by the hand
I have never seen anything like this before
You shot me, entered my blood, I accept.

Thansk for your kind comments. No offense meant to those who write "I love you" to their dudus, but it is a pleasure to have some beautiful poetry from an expert to get my teeth into. Any beauty in the English comes from the original poet, not me!

A wonderful translation Marion Your comment is modest but not true! You have to have something of a poet in you and a love of literature to be able to translate poetry. A strictly literal translation never works well.

I hope it can be added to the other works of Attila Ilhan in the Turkish Poetry translation part the Turkish Language Section. I am not sure how you get them added there though

Marion I thank you so much! I never thought this poem tells such a nice story with such a beautiful litarary language. Now I know what it means. Thank you again

"vurdun kanıma girdin kabul├â┬╝ms├â┬╝n"

Everyday I understand more and more why Attila Ilhan is so admired.
