It is amazing to me that the treatment of this woman and the fact that she was forced to live in a cellar and give birth to seven of her fathers children has turned into a discussion about Turkey. No country is immune to sick people like this...not even Turkey. If you want to talk about this case, lets do so with a little understanding and sympathy for the human suffering that has taken place and not make it into a political discussion about how evil the west is. Lapinkulta, I think it is good that you brought the subject up for discussion but the framework in which you choose to discuss this tragedy is a bit off color to say the least.

I agree 100%. Lets not turn this into yet another country comparison bitch-fest. We all know horrible things happen everywhere, and every country has its share of horrible men.

actually there are more gays in radical İslamic countries, they are more moderner in this field

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to HOW Islamic countries have a more "moderner" attitude to gays?

It is unbelieveable that this has been going on for 24 years. Someone in the near family must have known, at least the wife of this sick perverted man. How someone can be so completely oblivious to morals and common respect towards others is hard to comprehend.
Guess you can never know what is going on in the homes of your neighbours :-S

I thought this too, azade. Then my second thought was that perhaps the wife is mentally ill or incompetent. I often wonder how psychpaths can convince so many people that they are normal.

That's true. Psychopaths are 'normal' most of the time until they click, so to speak. But i think this must have been a very conscious act, as he was keeping them slaves in his own home. I read that he had constructed a steel door with a special code to contain them. I really think the wife must have known or did she think her husband was simply sitting on the toilet for hours when he was comitting whatever horrible acts towards his prisoners. Also something simple like feeding them. If she did not know she must have a case of dementia or something.
The story that he told everyone was also very strange - how did he explain his daughter missing ("running away") for so many years and meanwhile leaving 3 children in their care (of the six children three went to school). It's all very strange.

Such things are terrible but they speak more of backwards mentality than European moral decay. I don't think there is a single person here who finds such cases justified by customs, religion or lack of it.

It's not an example of where Europe is heading to, but an example of where it's been. Incest and abuse are against EU law and definitely not a trend these days. In the past, in isolated villages such things were more common than today. Living in separation from the world, being primitive or mentally challenged results in horrid acts. In the past (distant one), if an event like that came to light, there would have been hardly any consequences. Today, thanks to our legal system and level of social awareness, such things are only incidental and, should they happen, they are dealt with by the law.

As for homosexuals, I don't think that making them afraid of coming out means there are fewer of them. And, by far, it's not an example of how to deal with it successfully. Even the term "deal with" that implies it's something bad is discriminatory. It's like making women too scared to report rape and then boasting of having dealt with the problem.
