Greetings members,

I´m traveling to Istanbul in a few weeks, for business, and would like to know of any social customs, mores, etc. that I should be mindful of, so as not to offend anyone. I´d like to be a gracious guest.

Tesekkür ederim,
Max

I don´t think there are any significant Do´s and Don´ts, especially when you go to Istanbul. It is a very Western city. Just general courtesy rules is all I can think of.

- If you are invited to someones home, take your shoes off outside the door.
- Do not make eye contact with salesmen unless you want to buy something. (They will suck you in....don´t do it!) lol
- If you know 2 or 3 words in Turkish...don´t be shy...they don´t get offended if you don´t say it right.
- Bring a roll of travel toilet paper....they never seem to have enough in the ladies rooms. Can´t say anything about the mens room.
- Enjoy!

Thanks! I´ve spent some time in Saudi Arabia and recall all of the rules and customs I had to learn prior to the trip, so I´m glad to hear it will be a bit more relaxed in Istanbul. I´m also happy to hear that most people will be forgiving of my grasp of Turkish...or lack thereof! lol

Thanks again,
Max

Never!

He said he´s going to İstanbul for business, not for a family visit. If you take your shoes off when you´re in your suit, it will be very inappropriate.

Which is exactly why I said IF YOU ARE INVITED TO SOMEONES HOME. But again thanks for correcting me, mltm. You must be very busy policing all the forums.

Why don´t you try to think for awhile that you could have made a mistake before writing sarcastic comments?

I read it well. You may not know it but surely not in all houses in Turkey you take off your shoes. If it´s a business dinner forexample in a house, you don´t take off your shoes, they will look down on you if you do.

Taking shoes off or not, doesn´t that depend on the people who live in that particular house instead of the meaning of the visit?

Here´s a thought...Why don´t you simply just ask if they want you to remove your shoes...When I go into someones house, I always ask would they like me to remove my shoes. This isn´t really isolated to just Turkey.

Yes, alot of people do it here in the states. I just think it´s common courtesy really. I know after spending an entire day vaccuming and mopping your floors, the last thing I want is someone tracking in dirt off their shoes.

Shoes are always removed in my house whether or not it is for one of my husband´s (who is Turkish) business associates or not. Of course I should probably be quiet as I am completely ignorant on the subject.

I was just trying to give the guy some general advice. Sorry if this offended you mltm.

Yeah,i know what you mean

İt was same here long time ago,but now its the opposite,if someone asked to remove their shoes, they think its NOT courtesy of him !
So,how do you/they do it,i mean do you/they ask them to remove their shoes,or do you/they have slippers some where near the door so guests would understand it themselves ?!

I don´t think I have a big house, but considering I have three levels takes quite a long time. So what do you have dirt floors?

when I lived in canada and then here in the usa .. it was always considered "polite" to ask/remove your shoes upon entering the house. It was in consideration of the person that was cleaning/mopping/vacuuming. Also as winters can be disgustingly dirty with ice, salt etc it was considered very rude to go tromping in someones house with all that on your shoes.

There is a saying in Turkish :
" Bir Kızı 100 Kişi İster, 1 Kişi Alır"
which can be translated as "100 men can be in love with a girl, but only ONE MAN takes her home"

Ahhhh,i see, that makes lots of sense
Actually i was one of those who consider it not polite to ask me to take of my shoes, usually here we wear sandals in summer,so i cant imagin i be bare foot or wear someone else slippers in a strange people´s house!

But from that point of view, its very considerate i believe.

FWIW...I bought a large box of clean room shoe covers.

shoe covers

that slip over shoes. Anyone who comes to my home can just slip them on their shoes if they don´t want to remove their shoes.

For a variety of reasons I don´t like shoes in the home. One simple practical reason is: I have two cats who live on the floor and are susceptible to various contaigons that can be brought in from the outdoors. I don´t need or want any large vet bills, or sick cats....or people...

No, it didn´t offend me at all. Why should it?

I just told you that you may not know it.
In fact, it´s delicate to be able to determine where it is better to ask removing your shoes, where not.
For him, it´s better to observe the other guests and see what they are doing, because in a classy dinner at a house, it´s a funny scene when you´re left with your socks and slippers.
