ISTANBUL - Doctors, lawyers, judges and legislators say a woman’s hymen reveals if she has had sexual intercourse. ’This is in fact a lie’ and an important message in the introduction to and throughout the book, ’Virgin: The Untouched History,’ says translator Emek Ergün

Last week a 22-year-old from San Diego, California, whose "virginity" has been famously on auction in recent months, said an Australian man had offered $3.8 million to be the first to have sex with her. In November the manger of a private girl’s dormitory in Istanbul alleged that an 18-year-old female student was sleeping with men Ð due to bruising on her face and neck Ð and tried to dismiss her. After two hospitals administered virginity tests on the girl, her father told the media that the tests proved she was a virgin.

The media often does little more than provoke further ignorance and expose that no culture is immune to the continued sexual objectification of women. From one form of exhibitionism to another, recent news magnifies virginity’s status as a commodity.

Since it is impossible to prove male virginity, I found the fuss about female virginity idiot! It is the body of the woman, who are ´they´ to demand (!) she should be a virgin?

I agree Trudy, it is a complete and utter farce!

It is even impossible to prove that a woman is a virgin, depending on what method of sanitary protection she uses!!! {#lang_emotions_get_you}  A woman who uses tampons regularly can cause the hymen to break therefore making her seem she has lost her virginity.

Even if she did by sexual intercourse, so what? Women are not the possesion of men, not merchandise! As long as men think they have the right to f*** around, I think at least women have the right to decide about their own body! (Acting the same or staying a virgin, I don´t care, it must be THEIR decision!)

As the report notes, in societies as diverse as China and Italy, female virginity is emphasized as an important social norm that operates as a means of controlling women´s behavior.  Women who compromise their reputations as virgins may be regarded as unmarriageable or may be reviled by their family members.  The threat of such consequences compels women to conform to the behavioral standards deemed honorable in their community.

The state´s own use of forcible virginity exams legitimize the regulation of female virginity in Turkey more generally where social and legal norms combine to equate the maintenance of female virginity with family or male honor.  A woman´s rights to bodily integrity and privacy are seen as subordinate to the family´s interest in maintaining its honor, in part through the use of virginity control exams.  Although the conduct of private individuals is largely outside the scope of the report, Human Rights Watch is concerned about state involvement in the conduct of invasive and degrading virginity control exams instigated by private individuals.

That´s un understatement! Why are women with several partners in their lives called whores and men with several partners in one season called studs? It makes me so angry!

In Turkey, the situation is worse, unfortunately.

is studs something to be proud of it?

what i know for men having more women is a success.

we lived and continue to live in a patriarchial world, although if not women there would be no men. when you look at it, its actually is a comedy, because we are the base of everything, no women - no family, no women - no children etc etc. but however we somehow manage to be treated as second class citizens. the more we give the more we are humiliated. isnt it a paradox?

I think virginity has nothing to do with being chaste. But imo chastity is an issue shouldnt be ignored easily. Firstly i curse the hypocracy of societies that only women are being pressured to preserve chastity whereas imo this both applies to men and women. The only way a society get rid of this hypocracy, is education, using mind especialy for men and getting rid of traditional bigotry. Lastly i think men and women should have equal rights and men and women have different and supplementary roles at all levels, none of them better...

Thanks for bringing up this issue Trudy.

It´s sickening that women go to the gyno to have a certificate of their socalled chasity. If they can´t get the certificate by paying for it, they can get a new hymen by surgery.

I don´t know who´s crazier, the groom for asking his "loved one" to do it, or the bride to actually go through with {#lang_emotions_you_crazy}

Few women have hymens anyway, they are often broken from sports or other activity, and not all women whose hymen is intact by their first intercourse bleed.

Virginity is overrated anyway. Any why is nobody asking the groom to prove his?

This is a topic full of paradoxes and narrowmindedness
