Arkadaşlar herkese merhaba,

Yabancı bir arkadaşıma türkçe öğretiyorum(öğretmeye çalışıyorum{#emotions_dlg.lol_fast}). O bana sorular sordukça türkçede bilmediğim bir sürü istisna ile karşılaşmaya başladım. Yalnız şimdi soracağım sorunun bir açıklamasını bulamadım sitede ve istisna olduğunu da düşünmüyorum.

Öğrenilen geçmiş zaman ekini fiillere eklerken herhangi bir sıkıntımız yok.Şöyle ki;

gelmek    -- gel+miş+im/sin/....

başlamak -- başla+mış+ım/sın/...

Ancak isim soylu sözcüklere eklediğimizde durum karışıyor ve yukarıdaki örneğe dönüp sonsuz bir döngünün içine giriyoruz {#emotions_dlg.sad}

*Burada niye "y" geldi????? Kafayı yiyeceğim, bu nasıl dil Cool

Buffer Letter -y-is used in the formation of the past tense for Verb stems which end in a vowel.

See here under "Turkish to be Past Tense - I was, you were": http://www.turkishlanguage.co.uk/tobepos.htm

So, why do we say

başlamak -- başla+mış+ım/sın/... (ends with vowel)

instead of

başlamak -- başla+(y)+mış+ım/sın/...

and here

başla+sa+y+mış+ım/sın/... (ends also with vowel,but we use buffer letter "y")

Tough one - I found it here

http://cromwell-intl.com/turkish/verbs.html

If you just add miş, to a verb there is no buffer letter.

If you add miş to a noun it is (y) miş.

But Conditional + Inferential is

- se + y + miş

I was a bit quick in in saying all verb stems. This only goes for to be.

Deniz summed it up already: as I can see you use ´y´ in these cases:

1. past to be + adjective: yaşlıydı, he was old

2. past to be + noun: siyah bir arabaydı, it was a black car

3. And furthermore all past* suffixed verbs ending with a consonant.

- past conditional: olsaydı, if it was

- past necessitive: aramalıydım, I had to call

- past subjunctive: tıklayaydım

*Past being either -di or -miş

Follwing that rule: başla+mış+ım is without y because the verb stem is not suffixed with -sa or -malı or -yayım or such.

And it is başla+sa+y+mış+ım because başla is suffixed with the conditional suffix -sa.

I´ve never found a real grammatical explanation of this. Just practise I´m afraid. I´m hoping some native speaker can point to a source where this is gramatically explained. =))
