I also read the Kite Runner and found it very good read. My Afghan friends on the other hand, were very upset with Mr. Hosseini for writing the book. Interesting. After seeing the PBS documentary "the dancing boys of Afghanistan" I´d say he was pretty mild.

The book is good as well.  I think you can get it in Turkish too - If you ever read it and like it try A Thousand Splendid Suns...WOW!  Both are written by Khaled Hosseini who is from Afganistan.

Looked up the PBS documentary...So sad.  I guess I can´t blame your Afghan friends for being upset.  Nobody likes to look at the ugly side of their culture.  I agree, Hosseini put it mildly.

Another book that has raised serious concerns is "Kabul Beauty School". I am in agreement with them in this case. I feel she seriously exploited the situation, endangered the lives and well being of those who trusted her.

Subjects of ´Kabul Beauty School´ face new risks

Although the book was very interesting, she left those she wrote about very exposed. A lady friend of mine explained that even though the book is not available in Afthanistan, there is a large expat community, with ties to their homeland, who can read the book and recognize the subjects of the book. The damage she has done is inestimable.

It must haven taken a tremendous amount of trust to tell their stories.  I can´t imagine that these women have a way out if they are discovered.

Yes, it also sets back international relations, US relations in particular, back a great deal. Although I have some Afghan friends, I find they are not very trusting, and I understand why.

Many years ago a friend of mine, from Saudi, once said, we make friends, invite them into our homes, and then they write books about us. It´s unfortunate, but it seems to be true.

Another one is Nine Parts Desire.

I think these women should take the veil off their own eyes & look at their own cultures clearly, rather than going to places they have little understanding about, rather than going in like a bull in chna shop.
