Cyrano, you are too kind. I take my hat off to you, for all the wonderful work you do here. You help many, many people with your translations.

Well, how about the old one, "Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan mısınız"?!!

For learners I shall try to break this one down....

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan mısınız? -Are you one of those whom we could not Czechoslovakianize?

Çekoslovakya - Czechoslovakia

Çekoslovakyalı – Czechoslovakian

Çekoslovakyalılaş – Become Czechoslovakian

Çekoslovakyalılaştır – Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştırama – Cannot Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadık – Whom could not Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklar – Those whom could not Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımız – Those whom we could not Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan – One of those whom we could not Czechoslovakianize

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan mı? – One of those whom we could not Czechoslovakianize?

Çekoslovakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan mısınız? -Are you one of those whom we could not Czechoslovakianize?

Phew....

heeh there is also this one: Muvaffakiyetsizlestiricilestiriveremeyebileceklerimizdenmissinizcesine

hehe Nightingale I like this one! I can't think of how to translate it exactly - but I suppose it is "acting as if you are one of the people supporting bad manners"

Anymore for anymore??

It is a great idea! Maybe we could start some sort of regular meetings in the new year? That way new learners could even make it their new year's resolutions to learn Turkish?

I'm tempted by the Istanbul one too....

being limited to not being able to express your opinion if its not about the week's tv programme, in fear of being called "posh" or stuck up because i may know whats on the news or such.. whatever... :S
limited to not seeing other cultures or learning new things about different people any places... this must be hell on earth.. and i seem to have found it...
not being able to do certain things here and there becasue of racial discrimination...is life really worth it in this place??
and then to top it off... needing a cigarette.. and not being old enough to buy them!!

Miss Ceyda - never feel scared of seeming "posh" for knowing what's going on in the news or in the world - this is a form of education in itself - and education is one of the most important things in life. There is always so much to learn - pity people who don't want to know what's going in the world - or about other cultures - they are the ones whose lives are less enriched. Pity them.

But as for the cigarettes - be grateful you're not old enough to buy them

It's great that you're part of two cultures and that you want to learn so much. Cling onto that. And one day... you'll be able to leave the grey behind

Attila - I really enjoyed reading your post! It made me laugh at how ridiculous some peoples thoughts are! It reminds me of my how one time my flatmate was in Texas, and she said she came from London. The people she was talking to had never even heard of London! They thought she was making it up! Also, I remember once being in Turkey and talking to some Turks and I said I was from London. One of them said "Oh, my best friend lives in London!" - so I said, "oh really, whereabouts?" His reply??.... Birmingham!

Thanks again for your funny post Attila

Quoting Emipoos:

If anyone is able to translate the following into English I would be so grateful. Thanks very much in advance.

"Aksamlar niye mesaj atmiyorsun sen Hayatta tanidigim en iyi insanin seni seviyoroum"

Sorry I can't put the turkish letters in properly and I know what seni seviyorum means.

Thanks

Emma

Hi Emma

It says: Why are you not sending messages in the evenings. You are the best (most good) person I have met in my life. I love you

Hope this helps you

Natalie
