Quoting trip

BİR KAYIKTA DÖRT KİŞİ (FOUR PEOPLE IN A SKIFF)

Four people were in a skiff. A woman with blond hair, a butcher, a bald professor and also a young man with a pipe.

All of them also at the end were late to the last steamship. Giving a captain 50 million lira for this, they took got on a skiff.

Şimdi kayık karanlık sularda yavaş yavaş gidiyor du. Sarı saçlı kadın sigara içiyor ve dumanını seyrediyor du.

Now the skiff was going slowly in the dark waters. The blond woman was smoking a cigarette and watching its smoke.

The young man was both looking at the blond woman´s legs and also thinking of his girlfriend.

The professor also was thinking about AIDS and was wanting to find a drug for this disease.

The butcher was both eating pistachios and thinking about the cows and sheep in his shop.

Gece yıldızsızdı ve deniz biraz dalgalıydı. Sular bazen kayığın içine sıçrıyor du/geliyor du. Kayık artık Üsküdar’ı ve Kadıköy’ü geçip adalara doğru gidiyordu.

The night was starless and the sea was a little rough. Sometimes the waters were coming inside the skiff. Now passing Üsküdar and Kadıköy, the skiff was going straight to the Princes´ Islands.

Biraz sonra sarı saçlı güzel kadın rüzgardan üşüdü ve eteklerini tutarak kamaraya doğru yürüdü. Kamaraya girdi. Kamara çok kötü kokuyor du.

A little later the pretty blond woman felt cold from the wind and, holding her skirts, moved straight to the skiff´s cabin. The cabin smelled very bad.

Kadın hemen bir pencere açıp önüne oturdu. Çamlıca’ya ve Üsküdar’a bakıyor du. Her şey çok güzeldi. Dalgaların sesi bir melodi gibiydi.

The woman immediately sat down before an open window opening it. She was looking at Çamlıca and Üsküdar. Everything was very beautiful. The sound of the waves was like a melody.

The woman stood suddenly. Now the smell was worse and smoke was coming from below. She opened the door. There was lots of smoke within. She came face to face with heat. (a heat came to her face)

Below the captain and his assistant were trying to repair the motor. The two also were very dirty and sweaty. The woman was very bewildered. Then she started by shouting "We are burning, help, help, we are burning!" and ran outside.

Kayıktaki herkes çok korktu. Kapı açık kaldı: Onun için şimdi her yer dumandı. Kasap hemen sandalyesini tuttu. Profesör de kayıktaki tek can simitini aldı.

Everyone in the boat was very afraid. The door remained open: Because of it, now smoke was everywhere. The butcher immediately gripped his seat. Also, the professor took the skiff´s only life preserver.

Sarışın kadın genç adamın yanına gitti: “Kurtarın beni, lütfen kurtarın, yardım edin....... yüzme (swimming) de bilmem ben” dedi. Delikanlı korkarak “ben de bilmem” dedi. Ama biraz yüzme bilirdi.

The blond woman went to the side of the young man: "Save me, please save, help ... I also do not know swimming," she said. Being afraid, the young man said, "I also do not know." But he knew swimming a little.

The blonde woman this time wanted help from the butcher, but he was praying to Allah. The professor was worse than all in this situation; he was very afraid.

The professor´s students always thought of him as a hero, the professor knew everything and talked very well, but now he cried.

Sarışın kadın bu defa kaptanın yardımcısından yardım istedi. Ona sarılarak “Lütfen beni kurtar” dedi.

The blond woman this time wanted help from the captain´s assistant. Hugging him, she said, "Please save me."

O zaman kaptanın sesi geldi; “Susun!, bağırmayın! Niçin korkuyorsunuz? Şimdi motoru tamir edeceğim. Lütfen panik yapmayın.”. kaptanın sesi çok etkiliydi; herkes oturdu.

Then came the sound of the captain: "Be quiet! Don´t shout! Why are you afraid? Now I will repair the motor. Please do not panic." The sound of the captain was very effective; everyone sat down.

On dakika sonra her şey normale döndü.

Ten minutes later everything returned to normal. The captain and his assistant came up from below; the two also were very tired.

Şimdi yine kayıkta dört kişiydiler. Yine düşünüyorlardı. Sarı saçlı kadın artık korkmuyordu; çok rahattı; sigara içmek istedi, ama elleri titriyor du.

Now again the four people were in the skiff. Again they were thinking. The woman with blond hair was not afraid anymore; she was very untroubled; she wanted to smoke a cigarette, but her hands were shaking.

Delikanlı yine piposunu içiyor, fakat sarı saçlı kadının bacaklarına bakmıyor du.

The young man again was smoking his pipe, but he was not looking at the legs of the blond woman.

The professor now loved his wife, children and students very much.

Kasap da artık hayvanları kesmek istemiyor du; mesleğini bırakıp başka bir iş yapmak istiyor du.

Also, the butcher didn´t want to butcher animals anymore; he wanted to leave his profession and do a different job.

Adaya geldiler.

They came to the island.

First of all, the professor got out of the boat. Then the young man singing a song. The butcher with joy got out of the boat and went running like a child.

Sarışın kadın için dalgalı denizde kayıktan inmek kolay değildi, zordu.

For the blond woman, it wasn´t easy, it was difficult to get out of the boat in the rough sea.

The captain´s assistant extended his hand to the blond woman to help her, but the woman got out of the boat by herself without holding his dirty hand and fell; then getting up, she went walking like a mannequin.

Good attempt. By the way let me ask you, is your first language English?

Hi, I am a new member here. I want to learn Turkish. I really want but that is it. I tried to study it but it is really difficult. So I gave up. Now I just wait for a divine inspiration. I pray for it every day. I am sure one day God will answer my prayers. Meanwhile I want you to pray for me too. May God bless you.

Gosh you have short periods, gokuyum. Are you sure you have the right diagnose?

Don´t make a fool of yourself while manic.

Short is better. It is boring to stay in a mood for a long time. When I am manic, I mock people on the forum. When I am depressive I translate melancholic songs or write a poem

Mutual caring and friendship in the dark back streets.

Deniz Türkali as Melek couldn´t have been better.

I watched it again. It was very touching. Especially the death of Melek. Did you watch it with subtitles or not Abla?

Here is a great soundtrack from the movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fajKFUyeIno

Gece üşür meleklerine seslenir
Sarmaş dolaş arka sokak çocukları

Bıçaklar çekilir yüreklerimiz hep tetikte

Bu sokaklar korkulara dar.

Şevhetle biz sığındık birbirimize
Seviştik de öldük de öldürldük bile
Kaybedecek hiçbir şeyimiz kalmadı

Sanki bize bizden başka kim olur yar

Gece melek ve bizim çocuklar
Her uçurumdan sarktık
Anasını sattık babasını ağlattık
Düştük mü yoksa kalktık mı
Karışık işler bunlar
Gece melek ve bizim çocuklar

Back street children feel chilly at night

And hugging eachother they call their angels

Knifes are drawn, our hearts are always on the alert

These streets are narrow for fears.

We relied on each other with desire.

We made love, we died, even we killed

We have nothing to lose.

Who could be our friends other than us?

Night, angel and our buddies

We leant out of every cliff

We didn´t mind anything (literally: we sold its mother and we made its father cry)

Did we fall or get up?

These are complicated things

Night, angel and our buddies

I am happy you like it. I watched it long time ago and only thing I remember is that it was very touching. I guess I should watch it again.

Göküyüm, I agree. But both literal and free translation is important on a site like this, so I think it is helpful to do both i.e. give a literal translation into English and then present "how we would say it".

I believe that the greatest translators are the ones who translate the sense and meaning and feelings, not the words. I was really impressed once listening to a Turkish guy doing simultaneous translation. The Turk he was translating for said literally "X was the type of man who wouldn´t tread on an ant". The translator said in English "X was the type of man who wouldn´t hurt a fly." That to me is expert translation! And he did it in an instanti simultaneously, without even stopping to think!!

That is a perfect example of why I prefer literal translation. I would translate like him if I hadn´t worried for learnersi. A learner doesn´t read a translation only for pleasure. He wants to understand a text word by word. A free translation can mislead him. But that doesn´t mean we should translate everything literally. But if it is possible, I prefer literal translation.
