The western society values more the individual and the independence and that is why the accent is on "I" and on "I can do this by myself", "I can be on my own". In Islam, community plays an important role and the individual is seen mainly as part of the community, of its traditions and values. Marriage is one of these and the indivisdual must follow it. That is why "being single" is sth strange.
More, the west meakes no difference between HE and SHE (the equality of rights), therefore it comes natural for a woman be be on her own, whereas in Islam, the accent is obviously put on man, and without HIM she cannot be imagined as being able to cope with all the challanges of life...
