Muslims in Europe face growing hostility: report

Hostility toward Muslims is growing throughout Europe and Islam is perceived as a major threat by many Europeans, according to a new report by a high-level body within the Council of Europe.

The report also suggested ways to prevent discrimination against Muslims, calling on European countries to accept that a person can be a “hyphenated European” – for instance a “Turkish-German” – just like one can be an “African-American.”

“Multiple identities are a source of enrichment for our societies if they are handled well. One could be Muslim, Turkish and European, all at the same time,” said Professor Ayşe Kadıoğlu from Sabancı University, one of the members of the Group of Eminent Persons, which prepared the report.

Hyphenated identities is an acknowledgement of peoples’ existence, Kadıoğlu said, adding that the report reclaimed fundamental human rights and equality before the law while at the same time acknowledging diversity in Europe.

“Cultural and religious differences are not the source of conflict in Europe. Conflict arises when policies are not good – when cultural diversity is mishandled,” said Kadıoğlu.

“The far right and racist political parties in Europe are using anti-Islamic rhetoric as a tool,” said Müjge Küçükkeleş from the Foundation For Political, Economic and Social Research Foundation, or SETA. “Their main rhetoric here is ‘Muslims cannot integrate into society.’ But in fact, they are trying to put the blame on Muslims because of their unsuccessful policies on immigrants.”

Chaired by former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, the Group of Eminent Persons’ report on intolerance and discrimination in Europe drew attention to the “rising intolerance toward immigrants and Muslims throughout Europe.”

“There is a growing hostility to Muslims throughout Europe,” said the report, titled “Living Together: Combining Diversity and Freedom in 21st Century Europe.”

Islam is perceived as a major threat to Europe by many Europeans because they feel that the minority is growing and that Islam is incompatible with modern European life,” the report said. “Because increased immigration of Muslims to Europe in recent decades has resulted in more ‘visible’ Muslim communities and coincided with the growth of political Islam, many Europeans have acquired the conviction that Islam per se is radical, militant and incompatible with European values, and that Muslim immigrants and their descendants therefore cannot be integrated into European societies in the way that earlier waves of migrants have been.”

The report described the discrimination against Muslims in Europe as “a serious human-rights problem,” stressing that such prejudices are “combined with racist attitudes” directed against people originating from Turkey, Arab countries and South Asia.

“Muslims with this background are discriminated [against] in the labor market and the education system in a number of European countries. There are reports showing that they tend to be targeted by police in repeated identity controls and intrusive searches,” the report said.

These findings are not surprising, according to Küçükkeleş.

“The anti-Islam atmosphere that started especially after the ‘war on terror’ launched by the U.S. government after Sept. 11 has spread to all Western societies,” she said.

‘Role models’ for immigrants

The report by the Group of Eminent Persons held up Turkish film director Fatih Akın, Dutch lawyer Famile Arslan and German politician Cem Özdemir as “role models” for immigrants.

“These people can both act as role models for other members of those groups, showing that the effort of integration is worth making, and improve the image of their group in the eyes of the wider majority or ‘host’ society, by showing that people from that group can indeed make a valuable, even spectacular, contribution if given the chance to do so,” the report said.

It also called for immigrants to have the same rights and responsibilities as other people.

Like all other citizens in a democracy they should have a say in making the law, but neither religion nor culture can be accepted as an excuse for breaking it,” the report said

Turkey could be a mentor for least developed countries

TURKİYE AZ GELİŞMİŞ ÜLKELER İÇİN BİR YOL GÖSTERİCİ OLABİLİR

SEVİL KÜÇÜKKOŞUM

The least developed countries need a mentor and Turkey could play that role, a Somali official who attended the U.N. Conference of Least Developed Countries in Istanbul said on Tuesday.

“Least developed countries need a guide, a mentor, a patron that speaks on their behalf. Turkey is taking that role,” Dr. Abdiweli Ali, deputy prime minister of Somalia, told the Hürriyet Daily News.

Assessing the role of Turkey, which stepped up to the plate to monitor the next action plan of the U.N. for the least developed countries, Ali said, “Turkey is hosting this conference. It does a great job and we appreciate it all.”

Asked about the President Abdullah Gül’s remarks on the opening speech of the conference on Monday, saying, “Istanbul will then be the place where the first heartbeats of a new and fair world order are heard” the Somali deputy prime minister said he was already deserving that role.

“Hopefully Turkey is playing a role that it appropriately deserved to take and it is taking that,” he added.

Ali stressed both the geo-strategic role of and historical assets of Turkey, which was responding to a necessity.

“I am a great admirer of Turkey and admirer of Ottoman civilization. Turkey is strategically located between South and the North, between Asia and Europe. We think Turkey lays a service to fill that gap,” he said.

Yet, Ali criticized low attendance from donor and developed countries at the U.N. conference.

“We were expecting more donors or developed countries to come. Unfortunately a lot of them have not showed up,” he said.

Zacarias Albano da Costa, foreign minister of Timor-Leste, said they see Turkey´s role as host to be indicative of its generous culture, role as a bridge between continents, cultures, and peoples of the world.

“We welcome Turkey´s initiative for the midterm review of the plan for monitoring and implementation in areas where the Brussels Program of Action contains gaps. Hopefully, with Turkey at the helm of monitoring the IPoA, those gaps can be fulfilled,” he told the Hürriyet Daily News on Tuesday.

“As a member of the G-20, we look to Turkey as the bridge and strong partner in delivering the goals which will chart the development path for the LDCs for next decade,” he said.

Turkey could contribute to the goals of the new action plan by continuing to support the LDCs, the minister said. “There are great opportunities for Turkey and its people to invest in LDCs, both economically and in building capacity. Turkey is built upon the foundation of a great history and people and we hope that Turkey will be an example for other partners to follow,” da Costa noted.

LDCs had high expectations on the outcome of this conference and the implementation of what would be the Istanbul Program of Action, the minister said. “We expect this program to improve the lives of our people in every aspect, including economic opportunities, food security, peace and security, healthcare, and education,” he added.

Davutoğlu proposes to change name of summit

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu proposed to the U.N. chief that there should be a change in the name of the Least Developed Countries Conference. “I proposed to the secretary-general of the U.N. that we change this terminology as soon as possible, since this expression is disturbing,” Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu told a group of journalists on Tuesday.

Davutoğlu cited Nepali saying it was an economically less developed, but the country was a stunning center of religious tradition and culture. “I told them they should not take offence because we call them least developed, since that was a UN description,” he added.

Davutoğlu recalled that Turkey was remembered with its role as the region faced security problems. “However, from now on Turkey also enters to the problematic areas such as climate change, poverty and least developed countries,” he added.

Turkey would be more visible on world economics as it had been doing for politics, he said.

“On one hand Turkey gathers least developed countries, on the other hand it holds Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. This displays Turkey’s potential. This attitude has nothing to do with allegations of a change of axis. Turkey hold organizations that could address to entire world,” Davutoğlu noted.

I am not saying this because Turkey hasnt qualified, I am saying this because even this annual song contest lost its magic just like Europe itself..

I read some dialogues about internet cafe´ and encountered some questions.

1.Saat ne kadar?

(Is it means "How long does the internet cafe run." or "How long a customer want to use the computer."?)

2.Akşam saat kaçar kadar açıksınız?

(should I "açık" change in to "aç"? Because açıkmak means to be hungry in the dictionary.)

thanks.

1.Saati ne kadar?

How much is an hour of internet ? [what do you charge for an hour ?]

2.Akşam saat kaça kadar açıksınız ?

Until what time you are open in the evening ?

Turkish midfielder ace Nuri Şahin to join Real Madrid

Turkish midfielder Nuri Şahin has made his huge career leap and signed a six-year contract to join Real Madrid from Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund.

The Spanish giant announced the deal on Monday on its website realmadrid.com.

“Bundesliga sensation to sign for Real Madrid,” the story said, adding he is “a talented, young midfielder” and having “a knack for distributing the ball as well as recovering it.”

With a powerful left foot and an eye for ball placement, he is also a master at free-kicks,” it was said, “Şahin has wowed the world since the age of 16, when he became the youngest player to play and score in the Bundesliga.”

The German-born Şahin was one of the key players for Dortmund in the young team´s surge to the Bundesliga title this season, the Associated Press said.

Şahin will team up with Mesut Özil, another player of Turkish origins, but opted to play for Germany when it came to international selection, at Real. Mesut, just like Sami Khedira left the Bundesliga for the Spanish capital last year. He will reinforce a midfield that also includes Spanish international Xabi Alonso.

Madrid needs to beat Getafe on Tuesday to avoid Barcelona sealing its third consecutive league title.

Madrid ended a two-season trophy drought by winning the Copa del Rey in April, but was later ousted by Barcelona from the Champions League semifinals.

"This was a very, very difficult decision for me," Şahin said, adding that he would remain a fan and club member at Dortmund. "I like the club and the coach, and I feel comfortable in Dortmund, but Real Madrid is one of the best teams in the world. Joining them means taking a great leap in my career."

“I am approaching this with great self-confidence and have matured into a player who can make it at Real."

Şahin made his league debut in 2005, when he became the youngest player to play and score in the Bundesliga, before spending the 2007-08 season on loan at Dutch club Feyenoord. He has 26 caps for Turkey and one goal, which made him the youngest goal scorer for the national team.

His contract at Dortmund had been due to expire in 2013. The club didn´t disclose the transfer fee.

The club insisted that coach Jürgen Klopp´s championship-winning side will otherwise stay together next season.

"Only in this case were our hands tied," sporting director Michael Zorc said.

Madrid ended a two-season trophy drought by winning the Copa del Rey in April, but was later ousted by Barcelona from the Champions League semifinals.

"It wasn´t an easy decision to leave Borussia.

"I didn´t choose Real Madrid for money. I chose it because it´s the greatest club in the world. It´s impossible to say no to its history and current project. Jose Mourinho convinced me immediately. We met here in Dortmund one day. He is one of the best coaches in the world and I´m dying to work with him. It will be a great challenge."
