Let´s not put it that way as "being peaceful".
They just don´t have much concept of time. They do not believe in time. They do things usually the right time they believe they should be done. I know it from my dad. He always pays fines for delayed bills. And he´s still just fine. On average turks go to their appointments half an hour later, though one hour is still fine.

Well.. an impression of a tourist is very different from an experience of living in a certain place.. For example, when you go to the Bahamas as a tourist, you see beautiful beaches, wonderful hotel resorts, fabulous scenery... and when you step out of the touristic places there is unimaginable poverty and struggle... Somehow, I couldn´t enjoy the good things there when I realized how the rest of the people lived...
Turkey also has beautiful places, rich culture and history, good food... definitely a nice place to visit. What is most impressive, I think, is that you can feel that Turkey is on the edge of both worlds - East and West. Not too "eastern" and not too "western"...

I think I can now answer this related question as I am now living in Turkey and in Istanbul. The one thing that stands out about all others is friendship between Turkish people and the social aspect.
I find that most new Turkish friends I have always met are always wanting to meet up and just chat and if you do happen to break an appointment with them they are fine and do not keep mentioning it, like my friends here in the U.K.
I am slowly getting used to the food although I cannot cope with the spice side of cooking as I have a stomach complaint. I like the bus and dolmus services rarely are they much later than when specified on my experience so far anyway and very important and very convienient are the shopping opening times with most shops closing at 10.p.m. or later this is perfect for my wife who can do a little shopping when she comes home from work if she feels like it.
I am in the U.K. at the moment renewing my visa and visiting friends and family, I return next week for hopefully nearly two years.

I know sometimes I have to wait at the doctors even when I have an appointment. I would love to charge them back for MY valuable time. Some how it doesn´t work that way though.
I can´t imagine the ER or OBGYN Doctors in Turkey. Hmm, sorry Miss you´ll have to wait to push that baby out. The doctor is still at lunch, he should be back shortly.

This is rubbish..
What you are talking about there is my beloved Istanbul which is the most beautiful city in this world.
You are talking about a city which was capital when London and Paris were little villages and New York did not exist.

Istanbul is beautiful - but it isn´t perfect. The bus drivers do swear, they swore at me the other day because I complained he was smoking on the bus which is now illegal. When I said perfect description, I the description of his experience which is a daily event for most of us here. This morning right in front of my eyes I watched a man get his wallet stolen and the ensuing fight and chase just less than two metres in front of me in the middle of the city, I had to leapt out of the way before I may have been knocked over !
Istanbul is wonderful - but I was joining Ciko´s harmless joke on the word peacefully being used ! Amazing, overwhelming, historical and crazy come to my mind. If it wasn´t, Istanbul wouldn´t be Istanbul - the city we all seem to be addicted too !

On the Dolmus! How complete strangers pass their money and instructions of where they want to get off and the stranger passes back the change This I found very endearing, and how the young men get up from their seats to let older or eldery passengers take their seat. It is so socialable. What´s more, how the Dolmus driver stopped and asked us if we wanted to go to Bodrum!

I like that fact that there seems to be a unspoken trust. I mean, I see places like small marble suppliers shops, they have great big slabs of beautiful polished, absolutely gorgeous marble surfaces for kitchens or bathrooms stacked up outside the shop. They stay outside all night unattended and they are still there in the morning !
How lovely !

This is all a bit "rose tinted spectacles" for me! I love Turkey very much, but dont try to pretend it is crime free and full of lovely people who stand up for old ladies on the bus!
It is the same for any country - the cities and resorts have many crime problems, and the smaller towns less so. I love Turkey - but my love is not blind
