Turkish 'idioms' and eveyday sayings.

Couldn't find a suitable forum for this, but it might be fun to learn some Turkish 'idioms' - nice little sayings used by Turkish people to express a view or make a comment. Could those that know some post them in Turkish and with their (equivalent) English meanings.

however, i think we could do with some more - just everyday most frequently used expressions...so...our dear natives...how about giving it a go?

Well guys, I finally felt confident enough to tackle a short translation by myself. So I chose that classic piece of Turkish literature 'Elveda' by Ismail YK

I hope its not too bad, but could someone kindly check and correct my translation? I couldn't find the meaning of 'boynuna'and 'and 'bilsen nasil' had me confused also, there are also a few bits which i'm sure are very badly translated. Can someone help?

My only "source" for tukish poetry is our site, but I've already read it all and want more.
I would also call other classmates to follow Lyndie and try to translate something by themselves – after all, most of us are here to learn some Turkish.

Thanks Slavica. This is not just a beautiful poem, it is a really beautiful song. It is my favourite turkish song actually. It is by Ismail Yurtseven Kardesler. (Who is actually a Kurd not a Turk and was born in lives in Germany) If you would like it (or anyone else would like it)send me your email by private message and I'll send it to you. The words are nice and so is the music and the singing! (sorry to all my Turkish friends who hate the singer! heheheh ) I intend to tackle a few more translations of his ballads. I have learned most of my Turkish pronunciation and a lot of my vocabulary from listening to this music. My friend Yakup says, and I quote - 'CIK CIK CIK your Turkish is ok, but it is just a shame you pronounce everything like a German Turkish speaker and it is a bigger shame that your vocabulary is only about love!' (This is not entirely true I might add - and I have learned a lot of grammar this way too)

Thanks in advance, Lyndie. I would really like to have this song with such a beautiful words! I would also be grateful if you recommend me some more songs and singers, since I like Turkish music (especially ballads) very much, but don't know anybody else but Tarkan and Mustafa Sandal.
By the way – I'm in the same situation: I have learned Turkish listening Tarkan's songs and reading its lyrics with English translation. So, you can imagine, my vocabulary is full of aşkım-sevgilim-kalbım-canım-yandım.... Not funny! It was the only way for me to hear pronouncing, and also to see in practice all the suffixes, cases, nouns etc. which I have learned only theoretical. As for pronouncing, well, I'll see what will happen when I start speaking to Turks.
This is a great idea translating popular songs. I think that I will also try to do it, although it would be much more difficult for me, since English is not my native language, so I have to make double translation.
