Hi canım Abla. This is so true and I love trying to solve those puzzles too!{#emotions_dlg.bigsmile} Its like we are caught in a perpetual state of learning where we are trying to pick up little nuiances (and learn the rules) of a different language, in just this, the present time for us, however long its going to take. Where as a native speaker probably gets the first 10-14? years of their life to learn all the obvious as well as the subtle things from being immersed in the language. Smile

wow Abla, I am awed by how much thought you put into learning, I wish so much that Turkish was the only thing I had to work on and worry about, when I am not at work. I know I should finish my G. Design Associates degree, but more often than not, it has lately been slowing my progress in Turkish.{#emotions_dlg.sad} Ive been tempted to give it up but I know I will keep going because ı also love to be creative.

I know that after I complete the degree, I could focus on Turkish more and maybe even take classes for it. But thats still maybe 1 or 2 years down the road. Still wish I could take classes with you Abla{#emotions_dlg.bigsmile}

The corrections and improvements are mostly clear. Many of them I had thought of before making up my mind. A couple of notes only:

1. What is this? Geniş krallığımdaki en iyi şey olmuş oymuş” dedi.

olmuş -> oymuş = they say it´s him

2. “Japonya’nın imparatorun bülbülü Çin’inkiden daha kötüdür Çin imparatorununkiden daha zavallıdır Can’t one ki stand for both imparator and bülbül?

Japonya´nın x Çin-inkinden y would be OK

Japonya x-nin y-si Çin´in x-ninkinden z

3. taklit bir kuş imparatorun yatağının yakınına yakınındaki ipekli bir yastığa koyuldu/kondu. This seems clear to me: if there are two modifiers of place for one predicate, it’s good to change one of them into adjective attribute with –ki.

4. When the future form of a verb is a part of an idiom like for instance in


can’t it as such be used as a participle? 

 

OK but English text wouldn´t be correct as per your translation:

I am going to tell = anlatacağım

I will have told = anlatmış olacağım

- Just for interest, what about anlatıyor olacağım masal, is it bad, too?

- oymuş, is it a verb form of olmak? Never heard of something like this. It seems that I have missed something.

No but if you are about to tell it, it is not used.

I saw something funny in this text in the beginning but now I feel like throwing up when I look at it.

Notes:

1. I many times wondered what it means when you write the sentence all over again and don´t touch my attempt at all. I guess there are two alternatives:

         - The sentence is so rotten it´s no use to try to correct it, maybe it´s not even understandable.

         - The sentence is clumsy and funny but not bad enough to be cancelled.

Or maybe both at the same time?

2. The word family with gerek- stem is very confusing and I always use it wrong. It seems that it makes a verb, a particle, an adjective and a noun but I will have to find out how these are really used.

I guess that´s all. Except one thing. I hope you understand, si++, that as long as you always correct my excercises I will never understand to stop posting them.

Gerek is a noun actually but over times we have created a new verb with the same stem due to the this fact:

imek = to be -> negative form i-mez = is/are not (or "does not be" more literally)

"imez = not" in some Turkic languages (Uzbek, Uyghur) but not in Anatolian Turkish (we have değil for "not", you know).

 

Well, that said, gerek imez (not necessarry) is a remnant of imez in Anatolian Turkish. Over time:

gerek imez -> gerek-mez then with false interpretation we have turned it into a verb:

gerek-mek = to be necessary, so

gerek-ir, gerek-en, gerek-tir-mek

I guess that´s all. Except one thing. I hope you understand, si++, that as long as you always correct my excercises I will never understand to stop posting them.

Well, when I am around and have time, I can have a look.

Ouch, I don´t know if this is very sharp-eyed psychology or what but it wouldn´t work with most people.

It´s an interesting motivation for gerek- but not an unusual one. One of the things that often take language (and the world outside language as well) forward is misunderstanding.
