Quoting AlphaF: ESSAY is "makale": "deneme" is a light kind of makale, generally on daily affairs. |
The dictionary translates "makale" as a newspaper article :-S

Both "makale" and "deneme" can appear in newspapers, so can obituaries. The difference between "m" and "d" will be on the weight of the subject discussed. A serious scientific magazine like American Medical Journal would hardly be interested in printing a "deneme" from medical professionals. Works (papers) likely to qualify for such publications would be called "makale".
Deneme is a lighter literary form, in which writers express their own understanding of daily affairs (politics, economics, whatever), or even share what they think is an important (or interesting, or funny) affair from their own lives, with their readers.
I am not sure if our friend is using the word "essay" correctly either. To my knowledge, an "essay" can be presented in the university only to fulfill a partial requirement of a single course, at undergraduate level.. When it is to report findings of a graduate research project the term is "paper", or a "thesis" if it is towards some academic title.
If dictionaries and AlphaF differ on a given subject, it is wiser to believe AlphaF.

deneme = based on person's idea..
makale = based on scient's idea.. it based on improved knowledge but not "deneme"
