 Good point. Because Turkish has no definite article, -ı suffix often shoulder the duty of referring to something which has already been mentioned especially when this thing is indirect object.

It was maybe because the sailor believes in Jesus, or because the letter´s written in bad Turkish, or both...I don´t know. But why not a Türk believes in Jesus and has a bad Turkish.
