Thank you for everything. I got money from my boss, and s/he also gave me a present of whisky. I drank a bit of it. Let me also say I am quite a lot better now. I spent all day today looking for work and I found it. The one job I understand nothing about! I will work on a construction site. 15 YTL a day. Not great but I will work until I find another job

By the way this is my country, i don't care about yours. I am calling all kurdish are kurdish racists. ( execptions do not break the rule ). You can call any religion as any way. But the thing you never get is the fact of religions built by races.

It also happens to be the country of every person from any ethnic minority who wants to be here, who supports the country and loves it, who works hard, who pays their taxes, who does their military service etc.

And yes, I know many people from a Kurdish ethnic background who fulfill of these criteria. Even one goverment minister.

That is why Atatürk said "Ne mutlu Türküm diyene" not "Ne mutlu Türke".

In Turkey trade unions are called "sendikalar", from the French word.

Here are some examples:

Türkiye Basın İşÃ§ileri Sendikası (short name: Basın-İş for those who work in the printing industry

Türkiye Tarım İşÃ§ileri Sendikası (Tarım-İş for agricultural workers

Sağlık ve Sosyal Hizmet Çalışanları Sendikası (Sağlık-Sen) for those in the health service

Öğretmenler Eğitim Öğretim ve Bilim Çalışanları Sendikası (Öğretmen-Sen) for teachers

Türkiye Ulaştırma Hizmet Kolu Kamu Görevlileri Sendikası (Türk Ulaşım-Sen) for transport workers

etc

A good bit of advice is contained in todays column by Charlotte in Todays Zaman: Click here

(PS: before anyone else tells you, she is my business partner in Greenhouse bookstore, but I think you will agree it is good advice for anyone moving abroad.)

Oh yes!

Turk Telekom, the telephone company, has been on strike for over 4 weeks! We are trying to move our depot for the bookstore. All is ready except for the fact that we can't get the telephones transferred due to the strike. So no telephone and no internet at our new building.

hello all,

can anyone give me an idea of how much a turkish passport costs (for a turkish person) and how much a visa costs for coming to the UK for a holiday.

sağol, ekd.

You can get a Turkish passport for different periods of time. The longer the period, the more you pay!

Mine is due for renewal next Jan, so I will need to go to the emniyet (local security police office) to apply.

I will check the current rates and post them..

The emniyet'ds website says:

6 months: 95.60 YTL + 75.00 YTL for passport book =170.60 YTL total
1 year: 136.50 YTL + 75.00 YTL = 211.50 YTL total
2 years: 230.30 YTL + 75.00 YTL = 305.30 YTL total
3 years: 329.30 YTL + 75.00 YTL = 404.30 YTL total
More than 3 years (max 5): 466.70 YTL + 75.00 YTL = 541.70 YTL total

It goes up every 1 Jan.
Under age 7 free.

Turks also have to pay a fee at the airport every time they leave the country. I think this is 70 YTL at the moment

Thanks.

I spent a bit of time trying to decide whether to use "fussy" or "moany". Mız mız is really a cross between the two....
