All flights in and out of British airspace have been cancelled for an indefinite period because of a cloud of ash from a volcano which erupted on Thursday in Iceland. Reports keep changing on when normal services will be resumed but we´re due to fly to Istanbul on Tuesday morning.

Will we make it? Fingers crossed and watch this space!

Satellite imagery Sunday morning shows an active volcanic plume spreading ash southwards and southeastwards from southern Iceland. Remnants of earlier plume activity over Europe much less evident now on derived dust imagery. Recent information from the Icelandic Met Office suggests the volcano is currently erupting ash to a height of approximately 4km. Issued at 0850 on Sun 18 Apr 2010.

Thank you ptaszek-sorry your plans were disrupted. We just heard that our flight tomorrow is cancelled and the next available one is not until next Monday. We had already packed our bags etc. so now we have to carry on as normal ´til next week. We miss out on 2 nights in Antalya and will have to go straight to Kemer where we were booked in for 6 nights and will now only get 2 before we move on again.

News is that airspace will be opening tomorrow afternoon.

Soooooooo annoying!

We are due to fly out in six days time but now that seems unlikely. Ironically one of the flights permitted out of Glasgow today is going to Reykjavik.

from wiki:

The suggestion of a conspiracy to promote the theory of global warming was put forward in a 1990 documentary The Greenhouse Conspiracy broadcast by Channel Four in the United Kingdom on 12 August 1990. The program was part of the Equinox series,[1] and it asserted that scientists critical of global warming theory were denied funding.[6] Although the program uses the word conspiracy in its title, Patrick Michaels downplayed the idea, saying, "It may not quite add up to a conspiracy, but certainly a coalition of interests has promoted the greenhouse theory; scientists have needed funds, the media a story, and governments a worthy cause".[7]

Writing in the National Review in 1997, journalist Ronald Bailey said, "Militia members are famously worried that black helicopters are practicing maneuvers with blue-helmeted UN troops in a plot to take over America. But the actual peril is more subtle. A small cadre of obscure international bureaucrats are hard at work devising a system of ´global governance´ that is slowly gaining control over ordinary Americans´ lives. Bailey subsequently conceded that anthropogenic global warming is real, declaring that the "debate over whether or not humanity is contributing to global warming" is over.[8]

In a speech given to the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works on July 28, 2003, entitled "The Science of Climate Change",[9] Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla) concluded by asking the following question: "With all of the hysteria, all of the fear, all of the phony science, could it be that man-made global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people?" Inhofe has suggested that supporters of the Kyoto Protocol such as Jacques Chirac are aiming at global governance.[10]

A Washington Post article describing the views of global warming skeptics quotes retired climatologist William M. Gray as having "his own conspiracy theory," saying, "He has made a list of 15 reasons for the global warming hysteria. The list includes the need to come up with an enemy after the end of the Cold War, and the desire among scientists, government leaders and environmentalists to find a political cause that would enable them to ´organize, propagandize, force conformity and exercise political influence. Big world government could best lead (and control) us to a better world!´" In this article, Gray also cites the ascendancy of Al Gore to the vice presidency as the start of his problems with federal funding. According to him, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stopped giving him research grants, and so did NASA.[11]

Climate change denial is a term used to describe attempts to downplay the extent of global warming, its significance, or its connection to human behavior, especially for financial or other sectional interests. Climate change denial has been associated with the energy lobby, industry advocates and free market think tanks, often in the United States.[1][2][3][4][5] Some commentators describe climate change denial as a particular form of the general phenomenon of denialism.  The term is rarely used by those to whom it is applied.

There is nearly unanimous agreement among climate scientists that global warming is occurring and that there is a 90% or greater probability that it is due to human causes. However, political, economic, and public debate continues regarding the reality and extent of global warming and what actions to take in response. Numerous authors, including several scholars, have asserted that some conservative think tanks, corporations and business groups have engaged in deliberate denial of the science of climate change since the 1990s.

The relationships between industry funding and public climate change skepticism have at times been compared to earlier efforts by the tobacco industry to undermine what is now widely accepted scientific evidence relating to the dangers of second hand smoke, or even linked as a direct continuation of these earlier financial relationships. Aside from private industry groups, climate change denial has also been alleged regarding the statements of elected officials.

denial and lack of evidences are two different things.

To me so far the temperature is stable if not coooling down. winters are becoming colder. almost every winter we have tons of snow.

I understand the lobby link to the energy companies, but still it doesnt make sense. the companies do not appeal nor encourage to use more energy, opposite they raise their prices.

we will not stop using energy. I wont stop using computer or fridge.

in earlier Al Gore´s propaganda the antarctic ice cap was used to push the theory. btw, where is gore now? meanwhile we know it was one spot only that took a gradual change when in fact ice surface is increased on many other spots.

I am done with global warming.

Global warming isn´t the correct term. You should say global climate change. This means that yes, the winters are colder in certain countries, but the summers are also hotter. Less rain in deserts, but more rain in other areas. Alllll kinds of changes that upset local environments.

I believe in global climate change I read a lot of pro-literature and con-literature and the pro was more convincing. Although I do think that some organizations are messing with the numbers to make it look like more of a direct threat. I know this shock factor helps to convince people, but the "finding out you lied a bit" factor doesn´t help at all

Anyway, I´d rather believe in climate change and try to battle it, and be proven wrong later... Than to not believe in it, not battle it, and THEN be proven wrong later With Holland being below sea level and all, I won´t take any chances.

I dont believe in drastic climate changes, but believe climate changes a bit into both directions. one time its hotter, the other its colder.

Having said that, I do my own part. I love recycling, I dont waste energy. Everyone hates me for being an energy police. I walk around the house to check if everyone turned off the appliences. I compost everything compostable. I do it out of principles. I want it tidy and organised.

That´s what I mean with the battle Just trying to save energy, not driving a car everywhere, but walking, using a bike, and otherwise taking public transport. Screaming at people for leaving the tv on standby, stuff like that.

What is strange in Holland is that we had a good solar-panel financial support, but then they stopped giving subsidies :S I don´t get that.... Nothing motivates people like money

So what is the point of you to believe in climate change? what does is it change in your life for being its supporter?

what do you base on your belief in global warming (or CC)? do you believe that we human beings create more CO2 than our Sun or oceans?

we have not only doubled or trippled our industrialization, it has grown more than ten times. since 40´ we have advanced so greatly, it should mean that CO2 has increased at least the same amount meanwhile it didnt do even 10%.

Its a political movement that strikes the third world.

none of those enviromentalists have stopped using the traditional sources of energy.

can you imagine the amount of tax money flowing into the organizations and instituations consisting of politicians and scientists who enjoy their life compaigning and lobbying at the meetings hold in different countries. imagine the costs of this movement, its billions and billions.

I try to save energy, but if I was rich, would I really make such a big effort... The thing is, the whole idea behind climate change is that what I do in my house right now, will affect others for a long time to come. The deserts are growing. For me personally that´s not a big deal. And if the water of the seas rise, we will just build bigger dikes. But for the people who see their cattle die, because they can´t find any green grass to eat because of the lack of water, for those people climate change is the real killer. I believe in climate change, although it is open for a lot of discussion. I believe in it, and would like to see others believe in it to see if we can keep people alive.

It´s not a matter of "how much did we polute compared to this or that". It´s about a natural balance that is being disturbed. I don´t think we should wait untill the proof is enormous, but start taking measures right now. A lot of people didn´t believe in the hole in the ozon layer for a long time, until the proof grew to such an enormous size that it couldn´t be denied anymore. Measures were taken, certain chemicals were banned. And see, the hole became smaller. Humans DO have an effect on the environment in my opinion, and there´s not harm in believing that.

What´s the point in not believing in climate change?

you are disappointing me. I will not comment on your post untill you check all the possible resources both re: climate change and ozone depletion.

but I will answer your question. My point of not believing in the scare propaganda is that I dont wish to take part in it after seeing the results of my own research.

I do what I do for recycling and saving energy purely out of human duties. I hate waste. you dont waste energy - you dont waste money. everything has its own meaning without any global scare propaganda.

Whether you believe in climate change or not, everyone should do whatever they can to reduce their carbon footprint and stop being so wasteful.  Maybe there is nothing we can do to control the overall climate....but we certainly don´t have to make it worse and we certainly don´t have to be so wastesful.

Ah, hate to disappoint you But don´t worry, I looked into the pro´s and con´s. I have to say, it´s not a very clear cut issue. And for this issue, I do understand the people who say, the evidence is not convincing enough for me. But it IS convincing enough for me I had to form an opinion on this for my job, and I had to read a LOAD of research on it, and I´m not talking about only a few UN-reports or something (I don´t trust UN reports, only the pieces that I worked on myself ). Excuse me for interrupting for a moment. I´m still stuck here. Today I rang the hotel in Turkey and in my best Turkish had to tell them that I wouldn´t be there until Monday. I think they understood-impressive heh ?

You can carry on now.

hehehe-No worries Elisabeth-I´d never had a topic hijacked before!

Thanks for the good wishes-I´m sure we´ll enjoy it when we get there but I can´t help thinking that I should be sitting poolside with a G and T instead of being home watching Judge Judy!
