Thread: Continuing and Temporary Actions

It seems that in English the division of labour between verb forms is somehow upside down in sentences like

The Sphinx stands by the Nile

Mr Smith is standing by the Nile.

The temporary stop of Mr Smith is expressed with a progressive verb form while the patience of the stone takes the basic form of the verb. In the same manner, the English "live in a place" but "are staying at a hotel".

Türkçesi ne acaba.

Unfortunately you learn a language like a child only once in your life. Later, in order to learn you have to shoot the target from every direction. An adult learner usually tries to connect the new things with the old and use whatever ready schemes he has in his head. But I still believe it is important to throw oneself to the flow of language sometimes with no worries. (Because the child is still there, it didn´t go anywhere.)

I trust grammar. I guess it has become obvious. If the house was on fire I would try to save a few books. One just has to understand there is no such grammar which will explain everything thoroughly. A grammar is rather a commentary than the final truth.

I understand what gokuyum means. We cannot be too artistic here on TC because our first aim is to learn the language. But from the other side, discussing things which can´t be translated t-e or e-t word by word also takes us close to very important facts about both languages.

I even struggle myself when I work on the translation but the originals do not look so esthetic always, it breaks my eye...ok, I´ll take your advice, gokuyum.

maybe future in past..

Or past in the future. The speaker is in his mind looking at the listeners life as a whole (as if it was over already even if it isn´t) and from that point of view whatever happened is past.

Yeees, look at that. It was long and I had a headache... I thought no one would notice but you dug it from there.

You are spoiling me, scalpel. Colours and every thing.

Maybe I have something against children.

You made it look so easy. Thank you, scalpel.

- I hope life will protect you and you get everything you want...I wish you a happy, healthy life full of hope and peace of mind. And I hope we will also be in the edge of it.

- Instead of the edge I hope you will be in the deepest place of my life. When I cut my cake I want to hope for this. You and my sister Melek, you are the most valuable for me. I hope you have felt this. I just recently realized I have these feelings for you.

- As long as the feelings are mutual they are meaningful...don´t you ever doubt that.

- I know I love you folks a lot. I need to go. It was nice to talk. Kisses, tell my sister Abla my greetings and kiss her a big one on her cheeks. Let´s take care in order to see each other.

- Happy birthday. And again, take care of yourself.

My share of the work party, I hope it´s close to correct:

- Let’s say as soon as possible…we can make the island thing, even pool together. You just take care of yourself, the rest of the details we’ll see them later.

- Yes, it will be fine that way. But don’t make it too long, I’m saying to you give a date but you are being uncertain and not able to promise which time it would be. How can I remember you well, isn’t it?

- You are great…exactly…it won’t be long but wait, I will be calling soon.

- Well, that would be nice. Today I will probably drink. It’s my and my big sister’s birthday. We’ll go to celebrate it, I wish you were here also.

- Your birthday, October 23rd?

- No, that’s the date that I have determined, the real is 27 06 1989.
