Thread: New generation of Turks/ Taksim Park

I am worried about the role of the social media in these events. My Turkish friend´s Facebook account has gone wild. Many issues are opened with the words "please share this material because the official media is quiet about this". What do they mean? Turkey is not closed in any way, correspondents of respectable newspapers are there, and the events are well analysed. Everyone is a journalist these days. This gives too much power to circles who don´t want the situation to be settled down peacefully.

Besides, FB may give the wrong idea of democracy to people who are not used to political activity. Thousands of people pressing the same "like" button looks great but are these people ready to act in political parties in an organized way and reach those millions who live in another kind of reality? In the next elections the scattered opposition may end up still fingering their smartphones while the same old come and pick the fruit again. And then? Back to the streets?

So there has to be the meaning of ´going down, landing´, tamam. TDK says one meaning of inmek is

4. -e Bir yerden başka bir yere gitmek, varmak
"Bünyamin, gücünün yettiği kadar hızlı yürüyüp Haliç´e indi." - İ. O. Anar

and I thought it might be more general.

dememek is simpler than you think:

                     de|me|mek = say + NEG + INF meaning ´not to say´

Thus, ne demezsin is literally "what don´t you say" and Faruk explained its meaning above. (Turkish is a language rich with idioms.)

IYOR often corresponds to English present perfect tense.

                             Üç yıldır türkçe öğreniyorum.

´I have studied Turkish for three years (I still do).´

Maybe it is hayatım boyunca which makes IYOR impossible here somehow...it would work with kendimi bildim bileli anyway wouldn´t it?

New information for me, today was not in vain, thanks AlphaF.

No, if you still live there it must be yaşıyorum. DI and MIŞ mark an action which has come to its end.

My Try:

Burada doğdum, burada hayatım boynca/kendimi bildim bileli yaşıyorum.

Wait for corrections though.

Translation:

- We have given up building a shooping center on Gezi Park

- We will not remove the last green zone in that area.

- We will not cut the trees there.

- We will turn that place into a better park.

If the PM shows up and say something like this, what would happen?

- Would it be an embarasment for him or condifence?

- Would he lose his charisma or get it bigger?

- Would it be concieved as giving up one´s decision or stepping back from a mistake?

- Would his supporters protest him or applause him?

- Would his opponents humiliate him or appreciate him?

- Would Turkia be happier or sorrier?

Please tell me! What would it be?

A nice attempt of taking it onto an individual level. I often find myself thinking this way, finding reasons for people´s public behavior from their personal qualities.

Years in power change a person and not to the better. He is surrounded by people who support and flatter him and expect privileges in return. He may become blind to what really happens in his country, no matter how sincere his intentions once may have been. When he looks at the demonstrators he grows very small and instead of thinking like a great statesman he feels surprised and insulted.

Unfortunately politicians seldom think the way this columnist described.

Yes. The Turkish word order is quite flexible but this rule usually holds.

This is a beautiful pen.

bu bir güzel kalem.

That is a beautiful pen.

şu bir güzel kalem.

that is a beautiful pen.

Onlar bir güzel kalem.

In Turkish the indefinite article comes between the adjective and the noun:

                                    güzel bir kalem
